Requisition ID: 1612 Salary: $66,926.25 Annually Sandy Springs Fire Department The City of Sandy Springs Fire Department is hiring certified Firefighter/Paramedics for full‑time positions working a 48/96‑hour shift. The department has five stations with eight companies (2 aerial, one tower ladder, one heavy squad, and four engines). Staffed with full‑time firefighters/EMTs and firefighter paramedics. The three shifts are organized within a traditional rank structure with a Battalion Chief overseeing Captains, Lieutenants, Fire Apparatus Engineers, and Firefighters. Pay and Benefits Salary Schedule: FF1/PMDC – $66,926.25 Annual COLA and performance bonus where eligible Additional bonus yearly for participation in specialty teams (TEMS, TRT Squad, Bike Medics, Honor Guard, Fire and EMS Instructors, Arson Investigators) 243 hours of overtime built into the yearly work schedule The City of Sandy Springs offers a competitive benefits package that includes: Medical, dental, and vision insurance programs HSA and FSA accounts Retirement accounts (457 & 451) with 12% yearly and a 5% matching program Tuition reimbursement for college classes Paid vacation, holiday, and sick leave Paid military leave 72 hours of paid training leave per year to attend Fire Service training classes Annual Health and Wellness assessment FirstNet (AT&T) Employee Phone Discount Purpose of Classification The purpose of this classification is to perform technical and specialized work functions associated with preparing for and responding to fire, rescue, and disaster emergency calls, protecting life and property, supporting fire safety, prevention and equipment maintenance activities, and providing emergency medical treatment, transportation, and/or assistance to Firefighter/Paramedics. Job Description Under the direction of a Fire Captain or Lieutenant, the Firefighter I is responsible for conducting emergency and non‑emergency activities during an assigned shift; engaging in fire scene activities including basic firefighting and emergency medical care; directing and performing a variety of staff support functions; and performing related work as assigned. Key Responsibilities Adhere to all city fire codes, ordinances, and state laws to protect life and property. Respond with assigned fire company to emergencies involving fires, hazardous materials, and vehicle accidents; evaluate scene upon arrival; may direct traffic and control crowds. Control the fire situation including suppression, extinguishment, forcible entry, ventilation, search and rescue of victims, salvage and overhaul; recognize and preserve evidence of arson or other crimes. Select and properly operate fire service tools and equipment including hoses, nozzles, ropes, appliances, and sprinkler/standpipe system components; strategically position fire apparatus; monitor controls and gauges. Locate water source; lay and connect hose; act as nozzle or backup person; rise and climb ladders; use chemical fire extinguishers. Identify dangerous building conditions, electrical emergencies, hazardous materials, and ancillary health hazards; mitigate hazardous material incidents; take appropriate precautions; inform and evacuate individuals; implement medical protocols. Provide emergency medical care as an EMT‑I/A including basic first aid, vital signs, basic life support, patient assessment, CPR, spinal immobilization, starting IV fluids, maintenance, triage, defibrillation, inserting esophageal obturator airways, and other treatment; may assist patient with own medications per local protocols; implement infectious control procedures. Assess the effects of treatment; provide rehydration and first aid support during fire‑ground activities; provide emergency medical transport of injured persons; relay complete medical information to hospital personnel when assuming the case. Perform various rescue operations as assigned, including extrication from structures, trenches, underground entrapment, machinery, or vehicles; search and rescue of fallen victims in high‑angle situations requiring rappelling; animal rescue. Aid and assist with emergencies involving public transportation (rail, passenger bus, aircraft) and multi‑story/high‑rise buildings; perform fire extinguishment, first responder medical assistance, and operating fire control systems. Implement emergency techniques when trapped or disoriented; assist fellow firefighters; guide new recruits; maintain and wear protective clothing and self‑contained breathing apparatus. Monitor and communicate effectively over radio channels; exchange information with dispatchers, medical professionals, and other department employees. Prepare, decontaminate, inspect, inventory, repair, and/or maintain fire equipment, apparatus, hoses, tools, turnout gear, first aid equipment, and vehicles for safe operation; test equipment regularly; practice proper disposal of bio‑hazard waste; fill air cylinders; perform post‑fire clean‑up. Prepare pre‑fire plans including layout of building and hydrant locations; check fire hydrants for proper function. Establish and maintain good working relations with the public; attend community meetings; promote and teach fire safety and prevention; respond to questions and requests for information; investigate public complaints; execute disaster pre‑plans as needed. Maintain current field and code manuals, policy, and procedure documents; perform administrative record keeping. Attend shift meetings, seminars, drills, and training sessions to stay current with departmental and city operations, medical, and rescue techniques and equipment. Additional Functions Safety‑sensitive position subject to random drug and alcohol testing and any other testing methods as adopted by City of Sandy Springs. Must possess and maintain Georgia Fire Standards and Training Council certification; Firefighter certification and National Professional Qualifications (NPQ) Firefighter 1 certification. Must possess and maintain Georgia and/or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate, Advanced EMS, or Paramedic license. Must possess a High School Diploma or a GED Certification. Must possess a valid U.S. Driver’s License and a Georgia Driver’s License at time of employment. Must be 18 years of age. Have not been convicted of a felony in the past 10 years. Must successfully complete all steps in the hiring process including: Pass a physical fitness assessment. Pass an extensive background investigation. Pass a post‑offer polygraph examination, psychological and medical evaluations, and drug screen. Minimum Requirements Georgia Fire Standards and Training Council certification. Firefighter certification and NPQ Firefighter 1 certification. Georgia and/or National Registry EMT Intermediate, Advanced EMT, or Paramedic license. High School Diploma or GED. Valid U.S. Driver’s License and Georgia Driver’s License at time of employment. Age 18 or older. No felony conviction in the past 10 years. Successful completion of physical fitness assessment, background investigation, and post‑offer polygraph, psychological, medical evaluations, and drug screen. Preferred Qualifications Proof of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification. Proof of National Professional Qualification (NPQ) Hazardous Materials Operations.
