Summary The BCOP is the clinical point person in the Onvida Cancer Clinic, working directly with Oncologists to diagnose, perform repeat visits, and care for cancer patients with both liquid and solid tumors. The BCOP has 4–6 years of clinic experience, dosing and ordering appropriate laboratory tests once oncology diagnoses are confirmed. The BCOP is highly familiar with Research and Investigational Product (IP) management, manages protocols, designs and implements research studies, and continuously improves systemwide oncology medication safety and quality. Responsibilities Evaluate and interpret medical orders and prescriptions for appropriateness in oncology and other therapeutics; review current diagnoses with attending Oncologists and consult on protocols and medication dosing. Recommend, design, and implement therapy plans. Oversee clinic-based laboratory testing, oncology drug pre‑medications, and treatment cycles. Periodically dispense and manage medications including chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Monitor and assess patient responses to medication therapy and adjust dosing or therapy plans in collaboration with the attending Oncologist for required side‑effect treatment. Provide medication counseling to patients and caregivers about potential side effects and interactions. Collaborate with healthcare professionals to develop and manage individualized medication plans and therapy plans. Ensure safe and effective use of medications by providing medication information and clinical recommendations, including USP 797 and 800 requirements, at the point of care. Conduct research and develop IIR concepts to improve patient care and outcomes in oncology. Stay current with latest developments in cancer treatment and medications via an Oncology Journal Club and by attending at least one oncology conference annually. Maintain board certification status and licensure. Work with the Onvida Pharmacy Research Advisory Board (PRAB) and Health Research Steering Committee to review oncology-oriented research. Contribute to the Onvida Pharmacy Writing Group (PWG) by drafting scientific papers and Investigator‑Initiated Research (IIR). Participate in patient rounds, grand rounds, and clinical discussions as an oncology pharmacotherapy expert. Help ensure compliance with regulations and standards for preparing and dispensing oncology medications. Participate in Lean Management and A3 problem‑solving activities related to oncology. Surveil medication utilization patterns and work to achieve cost‑effective practice trends. Act as liaison among Pharmacy, nursing, and medical providers to coordinate new clinical initiatives. Help develop and implement oncology-focused competencies, education monographs, and lectures. Precept PGY‑1 residents in collaboration with the Residency Program Director. Collect, analyze, and summarize data related to oncology medication‑use events. Prepare and present medication monographs for proposed new oncology medications at the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. Strategy & Governance Design, lead, and annually refresh a comprehensive systemwide oncology medication safety and quality program aligned to enterprise goals and a just culture. Represent oncology issues on the Medication Safety Committee and provide regular reports to the Quality & Patient Safety Council and Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee. Event Analysis, Surveillance & Reporting Oversee oncology medication event identification, trending, and root‑cause analysis for medication errors, near misses, and adverse drug reactions. Apply data‑analysis techniques to detect patterns, implement risk‑reduction strategies, and monitor outcomes. Policy, Education & Culture Lead development, review, and implementation of medication‑use policies; champion non‑punitive learning and just culture. Provide organization‑wide medication safety education and manage cross‑disciplinary communications on safety issues. Technology, Automation & Clinical Decision Support Partner with IT/Health Informatics to optimize Epic Beacon, therapy‑plan accuracy, clinical decision‑support alerts, BCMA, and smart infusion pump drug libraries. Coordinate periodic reviews for oncology products. Quality Improvement & Performance Management Use Lean/Six Sigma and other performance‑improvement methodologies to design, implement, and monitor safety/quality initiatives. Maintain dashboards and oncology KPIs, and provide guidance to clinical teams on research design and sustainment plans for oncology medication‑use improvements. Regulatory, Accreditation & Best Practices Ensure adherence to ISMP best practices, DNV medication‑management standards, USP requirements, support survey readiness, and oncology accreditation activities. Interdisciplinary Collaboration & Leadership Serve as liaison among Pharmacy, Nursing, Medical Staff, Quality & Patient Safety, and executive leadership for safe oncology medication use. Participate in interdisciplinary committees focused on oncology medication safety and quality improvement. People Development (as applicable) Provide oversight and mentorship for residents, students, analysts, or coordinators assigned to oncology medication safety or quality projects. Credentials and Education Credentials : Pharmacist Certified Oncology Pharmacist (BCOP) Education : Doctorate degree (PharmD or equivalent). Minimum Requirements : Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD). Active pharmacist licensure in Arizona (or eligibility/obtained during onboarding). PGY‑1 and PGY‑2 oncology residency, 5+ years of oncology hospital pharmacy experience, preferably after being boarded and serving beside oncologists in clinic.
