Role Description The Direct Support Professional (DSP) is a full-time, on-site role located in Charlotte, NC, providing direct care and support to individuals with autism in residential settings. Day-to-day responsibilities include assisting individuals with daily living activities such as personal care, meal preparation, and household tasks while encouraging independence and self-advocacy. The DSP helps implement individualized support plans, teaches and reinforces social and communication skills, and supports participation in community outings, recreational activities, and appointments. The role also involves monitoring and documenting progress, behaviors, and incidents, following health and safety protocols, and communicating effectively with supervisors, families, and other team members. DSPs may assist with transportation, crisis prevention and intervention, and contribute to a supportive, predictable environment that honors each person’s choices and needs. Qualifications Ability to provide compassionate, person-centered support, including assistance with daily living, personal care, and community integration. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build trust, respond calmly under pressure, and collaborate effective with individuals, families, and team members. Basic documentation, organization, and time-management skills to accurately record services, follow schedules, and comply with agency policies and regulations. Capacity to learn and apply behavior support strategies, de-escalation techniques, and autism‑specific best practices with guidance and training. Commitment to maintaining a safe environment, including following health, hygiene, and safety procedures and adhering to confidentiality standards. High school diploma or equivalent required; additional coursework or training in human services, psychology, education, or related fields is beneficial. Prior experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities, autism, or in direct care roles is preferred but not always required. Ability to meet physical demands of the role, such as assisting with transfers, standing or walking for extended periods, and participating in activities.
