JOB TITLE: Senior Counsel Torts Training SALARY RANGE: $154,000 - $165,000 HAY POINTS: 1056 DEPT/DIV: MTA Corporate Compliance SUPERVISOR: Deputy General Counsel LOCATION: 130 Livingston, Brooklyn NY HOURS OF WORK: 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM (7 1/2 hours/day) This position is eligible for telework which is currently one day per week. New hires are eligible to apply 30 days after their effective date of hire. SUMMARY: Our Torts division is implementing a new development program focused on training and supporting newly hired Attorneys that have recently graduated.This role will lead this initiative and design curriculum that will acclimate employees to case management and work managed in the division. The selected experienced attorney will lead training and supervise legal work in early stages of the attorney’s tenure making best use of early-career resources. RESPONSIBILITIES: Design training curriculum for Torts attorneys to prepare them to practice personal injury and property damage defense litigation in New York City. Design training curriculum for non-attorney staff (e.g., investigators) to prepare them to support department (e.g., court prep, claims management, evidence gathering). Mentor and guide attorneys as relevant and ensure consistency in practice, including specific supervision of their initial caseload through all stages of case, performance feedback, and developing specific resources to support their needs. Practice law to defend the Authority against personal injury and property damage claims, including handling complex claims, developing strategies to resolve claims, accurately assessing exposures, completing legal research, and effectively communicating and interacting with external departments. Advise on recruitment, selection, and retention of early-career talent, including interfacing with internal stakeholders (E.g., HR) and external stakeholders (E.g., feeder schools) to make sure Torts is partnering with right institutions and sources. Other duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Proven ability to litigate complex, high exposure varied tort caseload independently and collaboratively as part of a litigation team, under pressure and tight time constraints imposed internally or by the Courts. Exceptional analytical, verbal, writing and negotiation skills and proven ability to exercise sound judgment. Proven ability to build and develop professional relationships necessary to litigation (i.e.: clients, adversaries, judiciary). Proven ability to evaluate, devise and implement litigation strategies designed to reduce tort exposure. Proven ability to forensically analyze medical records and varied technical information. Ability and command over all types of research including but not limited to legal research engines, general internet searches and investigative searches. Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or comparable applications, i.e.: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: REQUIRED A law degree and admission to the Bar of the State of New York. In addition, a minimum of ten (10) years of significant litigation or other relevant experience. PREFERRED: At least 3 years in a managerial and/or leadership role. Prior experience working in a large, multi-faceted, fast-paced organization or governmental body. Experience with administering a training program or develop a curriculum, e.g., in adjunct role or with Legal clinics.
