Field Service Technician

• Location: Harrisburg, South Dakota. Remote considered in Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan for exceptional candidates.
• Earnings: $80,000 to $100,000+ a year, based on an average 50-hour week. $27.50 to $36.00 an hour depending on experience, plus overtime and per diem.
• Travel: 3 overnights most weeks. Home for the weekend. Company plane on many routes.
• Sign-on bonus of $2,500!

The Opportunity

Ask our customers what RMS does best and they’ll usually say our service. Our field service is what this industry knows us for, and it’s built by people like you doing this job.

You’ll work on every make and model of roller mill out there, at feed mills, ethanol plants, soy processors, and grain facilities. Most weeks you head out Monday or Tuesday by truck or company plane, work three or four days across customer sites, and you’re home for the weekend. You’ll usually be alone or with one other tech. You’re our eyes on the job. We support you. The work is on you.

What You’ll Do

• Roll changes: pull worn rolls and bearings, install new, then check the whole machine for anything else that needs work.

• Wellness visits: go through a full machine setup and figure out what it needs to keep running well (even upstream and downstream beyond RMS equipment).

• Startups and commissioning on new installs, for the customer and their contractor.

• Maintenance or breakdown calls: a grind issue, a failed part, a bearing, belt tension. Some planned, some not.

• Train customer operators and maintenance crews on running and maintaining the equipment.

• Tell the customer what you’re going to do, what you found, and what you recommend.

• Send what you see in the field back to engineering so the machines get better.

• Keep your paperwork straight and accurate, including the reporting and billing that follows a job.

What You Bring Required

• Strong mechanical aptitude. You can take equipment apart, see what’s wrong, put it back together right, and understand how one change affects the rest of the process.

• Comfortable with hand tools and hands-on work. This job runs about 70% mechanical and 30% electrical.

• Fine being in environments that can be dirty, dusty, hot, and cold.

• Willing and able to be on the road 3 overnights most weeks.

• You can explain what you’re doing and why, to an operator, a plant manager, or our engineers.

• Can be steady with a customer who’s frustrated, whose machine is down, and who’s waiting on your solution or answer.

• When the right part, tool, or information isn’t there, you work the options and come back with a recommendation.

• High school diploma or equivalent. Valid driver’s license, plus a CDL (Class A, no air brakes) or the ability to work with us and obtain one within 90 days. Able to meet DOT compliance within 90 days.

Formal education? Trade program? Little education but years of experience? It all works for us.

Preferred

• Field service, millwright, industrial repair, or traveling technician experience. If remote in Indiana, Ohio, or Michigan, this is required.

• Hydraulics, pneumatics, welding, or fabrication experience.

• Time in feed, grain, ethanol, or other processing plants.
