The City of Hemet, tucked in a valley surrounded by the Santa Rosa Hills and the San Jacinto Mountains, is embarking on a journey of revitalization and growth. Founded in 1910, the City of Hemet, with a population of approximately 80,000, is located in western Riverside County. Hemet was originally an agricultural community, but later became known as a retirement destination. In the early 1990's Hemet experienced a construction boom which brought new residential neighborhoods, larger families, and new commercial, retail, and office development. With this growth, Hemet began its transition from a retirement and snowbird haven to a modern, diverse suburban community. Hemet is home to unique recreational amenities. Diamond Valley Lake, Southern California's largest freshwater reservoir built by the Metropolitan Water District, features hiking, boating, and world class fishing year round. Every spring, Ramona, the United States' longest running outdoor play, attracts thousands of visitors to the valley. With access to Hemet from CA 74, CA 79, and Interstates 215, 15, and 10, Hemet is ideally located to enjoy the four sport California day, where you can surf in the morning, snowboard midday, mountain bike in the afternoon, and finish with a round of golf or a game of tennis. Los Angeles and San Diego are just over an hour away. The beauty of the desert and spa lifestyle of Palm Springs is yours within 45 minutes.
The City of Hemet is a full-service City with its own Police and Fire Departments, as well as Water Utility. The City of Hemet follows a Council-Manager form of government. The City Council consists of five members elected by district. Among this group, the Mayor is appointed by his/her colleagues. The City Council appoints a City Manager who is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the City. In addition to the City Manager, the Executive Management Team includes department heads who have oversight of Administrative Services, Police, Fire, Community Development, and Public Works.
Develop job skills and gain valuable work experience through various departments within the City of Hemet. Volunteer assignments vary depending on individual interest, talents, and positions available at the time of inquiry. Volunteer assignments and internships exist throughout the city and may include:
- Answering telephone and directing citizen inquiries
- Performing various clerical duties
- Planning and assisting in community event projects
- Providing assistance in the Public Library
- Creating a safer community as a volunteer with the Police and Fire Department
Depending on the assignment, skills and abilities will vary. All assignments must be carried out with professionalism and integrity, as you will be a reflection of the City. Minimum qualifications to apply include:
- Reliability
- Positive attitude
- Willingness to be a team player
A valid work permit is required for volunteers under the age of 18.
All volunteers will be subject to have livescan prints submitted to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for clearance. *ALL REQUIRED DOCUMENTS MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH APPLICATION AS ATTACHMENTS. The City of Hemet does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, ancestry, genetic information, marital status, parental status, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, disability, status as a veteran, handicapped status in employment or the provision of services.
