Supervisory Dental Assistant

The Supervisory Dental Assistant is an integral member of the dental team and facilitates team processes by working collaboratively with team members to ensure that tasks are completed, that good working relationships among team members and with management are maintained, and that team priorities, goals, needs, and achievements are coordinated with management. The Supervisory Dental Assistant assists the dental team in many aspects of direct patient care and performs clinical, dental laboratory, administrative/clerical, and program management functions independently of direct supervision. Other duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Supervises a team of employees performing at the GS-7 level or below; providing guidance and technical direction necessary for accomplishing the work of the team, and assures compliance with VA policies.
• Plan and assign work and make adjustments in accordance with established priorities; setting and adjusting short-term priorities.
• Evaluate the performance, progress, and training needs of subordinate employees.
• Prepare performance appraisals and performance improvement plans when problems are identified.
• Issue minor disciplinary actions, such as warning and reprimands. Recommend other action in more serious cases.
• Interview candidates for dental assistant positions, recommend appointment, promotion, or reassignment. Recommend awards or recognitions of performance.
• Oversee the Systems Redesign Program to identify ways to improve production or improve quality.
• Monitor work in progress to ensure that the staff dental assistant's clinical performance meets the dentist's instructions. Confer with dental chief or supervisory dentist if unable to resolve major issues or problems.
• Identify developmental and training needs of employees for specific tasks and job techniques. Train employees (dentist, dental residents, and dental assistants) in computerized dental patient record systems including generating patient consults, storing and viewing digital images, entry of diagnostic data and preparation of treatment planning.
• Arrange for training of team members, students and volunteers in the accomplishment of tasks or projects. Maintain current knowledge and answer questions from team members on procedures, policies, and directives.
• Make written instructions, reference materials, and relevant background material available. Obtain needed information on decisions from the supervisor on major issues and problems that arise.
• Ensure that the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are organized and maintained.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM (Note: Work schedules are determined and approved by the supervisor. The incumbent may be required to work various shifts on a permanent or temporary basis based on facility/patient care needs).

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases
