Advanced Practice Provider – Orthopaedic Services Reports to: Orthopaedic Program Manager Job Code(s): 800723; 800727 (per diem). Department: Orthopaedics. Minimum Qualifications Education: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program. Experience: No experience required. Licensure / Registration / Certification: Licensed as a Physician Assistant by the State of Minnesota. Or Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the State of MN with Current Nurse Practitioner Certification. BLS or ACLS certification required. Preferred Qualifications Experience: Prefer 1–2 years of experience in orthopedic surgery and clinic environment, including first assisting and independent patient care. Position Summary Statement The Advanced Practice Provider in Orthopaedic Services coordinates care of orthopaedic patients. In the operating room and on the nursing units, the position first assists the surgeon by preparing grafts, closing incisions, and providing first and second assistance as needed. On the inpatient unit, the position coordinates patient care and assists the surgeon with post‑operative nursing care, including assessment, ordering medication and treatments, daily rounding, rotating weekend rounding and call. Per diem APP Ortho positions are required to work at least one weekend per quarter or as determined by the Orthopaedic department. Major Job Duties and Tasks 1. Operative assistance and post‑operative care (30%) Assist orthopaedic surgeons in the operating room and after surgery on the nursing units. Coordinate care with surgeons, fellows, residents, and nursing staff. Maintain knowledge of pre‑ and post‑operative care. Change dressings, apply and remove casts, splints, and braces. Write orders for medications and treatments to facilitate post‑operative care. Complete discharge order sets and dictate discharge summaries in a timely manner. Daily rounding on inpatients at Regions Hospital and affiliated sites with monthly weekend rounding and/or call responsibilities as assigned. Obtain consults and collect patient information. Coordinate the admitting process. Maintain and review patient records, charts, and other relevant information; document in the EMR. Discuss and develop diagnosis and pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatment plans with staff physicians for both inpatient and outpatient patients. Educate patients and families on diagnosis, treatment, and recovery process including prescribed medications. 2. Outpatient clinic patient care (30%) Obtain patient history and conduct examinations. Order appropriate labs, radiology exams, and medications. Perform minor procedures. 3. Education and resource (10%) Explain procedures to nursing staff to assist in care planning. Provide patients/families with explanations of treatments to assist in decision making/informed consent process. Obtain informed consent as needed. 4. Collaboration and teamwork (10%) Regularly discuss and collaborate with physicians and other healthcare team members regarding patient care plans. Respond to consultation requests promptly and effectively. Direct patient care within scope of practice for an Advanced Practice Provider. Handle conflict or confrontation professionally. Participate on committees as assigned. 5. Patient/family liaison (10%) Act as liaison between patient/family and healthcare team. Provide accurate and timely verbal and written communication. Initiate and/or participate in team conferences, family meetings, etc. Handle conflict and confrontation respectfully and professionally. 6. Research assistance (10%) Interview patients and collect information, including authorization forms. Discuss cases with surgeons. Maintain appropriate documentation and databases. 7. Problem solving (10%) Maintain knowledge of regulatory influences (CMS, JCAHO) and apply standards to clinical practice. Adapt to changing priorities and work accordingly. Participate in and lead discussions for clinical problem solving. Set priorities and use critical thinking skills. 8. Comply with work rules, standards, and policies. Perform additional duties as necessary to meet patient and team needs. 9. Continuing education (10%) Maintain updates in clinical knowledge, including BLS, ACLS, NALS certifications. Stay current with new information, policies, and procedures. Improve and expand clinical expertise through reading, in‑services, conferences, etc. Complete annual required education. Environmental Conditions Office/OR/Nursing Unit Environment: Stand 4–6 hours and walk 2–4 hours daily; may view a computer screen up to 3 hours a day; lift, push, pull training equipment up to 50 lbs; transport self throughout the hospital; perform tasks requiring fine motor and hand/eye coordination. Office Environment: Possible exposure to printer/copy machine cartridges (no extreme conditions). Operating Room/Patient Care Unit: Possible exposure to hazardous substances, harmful physical agents, infectious agents; sharps, anesthesia gases, radiation. Equipment Office: Computer, fax, printer, copy machine, other office devices, audiovisual equipment.
