Structural Ironworker

POSITION SUMMARY

MECO Group is seeking experienced structural ironworkers for the SSS MCS Madison Early Learning Center public-works project. This position erects and connects conventional structural steel and performs unloading, staging, connecting, bolting, plumbing, and alignment while working around cranes and mobile equipment and at elevation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Read structural drawings, erection plans, detail sheets, connection details, and bolt schedules.
• Unload, shake out, stage, connect, bolt, plumb, align, and secure structural-steel members.
• Perform bolt-up work with spud wrenches, sleever bars, bull or drift pins, levels, and approved impact equipment.
• Perform basic rigging and signaling; inspect slings and hardware and comply with designated lift plans and signal-person requirements.
• Work from aerial lifts, ladders, scaffolds, and structural members while maintaining required fall protection.
• Operate forklifts, telehandlers, or aerial lifts only after MECO training, evaluation, and authorization.
• Participate in daily pre-task planning and comply with the site-specific safety plan, fall-protection requirements, controlled-access areas, and all superintendent or foreman instructions.
• Inspect personal tools and assigned equipment before use; immediately remove defective items from service and report unsafe conditions.
• Complete required inspections, job hazard analyses, time records, and safety documentation accurately and on time.
• Maintain dependable attendance and productivity and work cooperatively with the foreman, crane operator, safety personnel, and other trades.
• Immediately report injuries, property damage, near misses, and suspected impairment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• At least two years of documented structural ironwork or conventional steel-erection experience preferred.
• Ability to read structural drawings and identify members, connection details, bolt types, and erection sequencing.
• Working knowledge of fall protection, rigging, hand signals, struck-by hazards, dropped-object prevention, and controlled-access areas.
• Ability to work safely at elevation and around cranes and suspended loads.
• Reliable transportation to the Madison, Indiana project and consistent punctual attendance.
• Ability to satisfy background-screening and pre-employment and continuing drug-testing requirements under MECO policy, project requirements, and Indiana public-works law.

PHYSICAL AND WORK REQUIREMENTS

• Frequently stand, walk, climb, balance, bend, kneel, reach, grip, and work outdoors and at elevation.
• Lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently and move heavier materials with team lifting or mechanical assistance.
• Work around cranes, suspended loads, welding operations, noise, sparks, sharp edges, mobile equipment, and uneven surfaces.
• Perform the essential functions safely, with or without reasonable accommodation, while wearing required PPE.

EMPLOYEE PROVIDED TOOLS AND CLOTHING

• Non-specialty safety-toe work boots and durable work clothing suitable for outdoor steel erection.
• Tool belt or bolt bag, harness, tape measure, spud wrench or wrenches, adjustable wrench, bull or drift pin, sleever bar, torpedo level, chalk or soapstone, pliers, hammer, and customary personal hand tools.
• Personal tools must be serviceable and comply with site rules, including tethering when required.

MECO Provided Equipment and PPE

• MECO provides cranes, lifts, forklifts, rigging, large impact equipment, designated power tools, and PPE required by OSHA or the site-specific safety plan.
• MECO prefers experienced ironworkers who possess their own professional-grade personal fall-protection equipment appropriate for structural steel erection. Employee-owned fall-protection equipment may be used only after inspection and approval by MECO Safety to ensure the equipment is appropriate, compatible, properly maintained, and compliant with applicable safety requirements. MECO will provide required fall-protection equipment when necessary and as required by applicable law and Company policy.

COMPENSATION AND EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS

• Starting pay is $30.00 to $35.00 per hour, based on demonstrated connecting, bolt-up, rigging, drawing-reading, equipment, and steel-erection experience.
• This is a nonexempt position. Overtime is paid in accordance with applicable law.
• Per diem, mileage, travel time, and lodging are governed by the written project assignment and MECO policy and are not automatic .
• Employment is contingent on work authorization, required onboarding, background screening, and the project drug-testing program.
