2026 Summer Programs - Summer Calculus Project: Lead Teacher

Overview The Calculus Project aims to increase the representation and success of Black, Hispanic, and low‑income students in advanced mathematics through research-supported strategies. There are seven components that support students year‑round, including pre‑teaching in the summer. Somerville Public Schools partners with the Calculus Project Organization to bring the TCP program to our students. Teachers who thrive at TCP love kids, embrace feedback, and build connections. As a summer Lead Teacher, you will work with 20–25 students and design a four‑week curriculum in collaboration with the TCP director and assistant director, introducing key topics from the SPS honors fall curriculum to prepare students for the upcoming school year. You will have an associate teacher and at least one student peer teacher, chaperone field trips, and teach team building and career exploration activities planned by TCP. The Calculus Project fosters a learning community where students own their learning, collaborate, and view peers as resources. We seek teachers who can support this community of learners. Responsibilities Provide direct instruction on Pre‑Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre‑Calculus, and/or Calculus Collaborate with a grade level team that includes an Associate Teacher and a Peer Teacher/Mentor Employ clear, effective, culturally proficient instructional practices and use data (qualitative, quantitative, formal, and informal) to improve teaching strategies Create a nurturing learning environment, maintain high behavioral and academic standards, and foster collaboration and exploration Design rigorous, grade‑level activities that address student skill gaps and support conceptual understanding and procedural proficiency; review student assignments to track progress and plan instruction Support Associate Teachers during small group time as needed Modify pre/post‑assessments and analyze results with the Associate Teacher and Program Director Facilitate the Count Forward curriculum, highlighting achievements of STEM professionals of color Adapt short‑term projects to fit summer learning goals Supervise Peer Teacher/Mentors as they lead an afternoon club with up to 15 students Chaperone a small group of students during field trips Attend up to 1.5 hours per week of daily debriefs with TCP summer staff Respond to behavior concerns, conflicts, and crises as they arise Report incidents to summer leadership and complete required documentation Qualifications/Expectations MA DESE Educator License in Mathematics, 5–8 or 9–12 At least three years of experience in a middle or high school setting Demonstrate creativity and foster curiosity and excitement about learning mathematics Communicate effectively with students and staff from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds Treat all staff and students with respect at all times, identify biased and hateful incidents, and respond appropriately Preferred Qualifications Experience working with youth in a summer program Spanish, Portuguese, or Haitian Creole language proficiency is a plus Program Schedule July 6, 2026 – July 31, 2026 Monday through Friday Students: 6 hours/day, 9am–2pm Staff: 6 hours/day, 9am–2:30pm, includes 30 minutes lunch Terms Of Employment Seasonal/Yearly Employment Location: East Somerville Community School Stipend: $35/hour Mandatory Orientation and Professional Development Days: Week of June 22, 2026 Reports The Somerville Public Schools do not discriminate in its programs, facilities or employment of educational opportunities on the basis of race, color, age, religion, disability, pregnancy, home status, marital/civil union status, sex/gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, citizenship status, place of birth, national origin, ancestry, cultural identity, genetics or military status, and do not tolerate retaliation, bias‑based intimidation, threats, or harassment that demeans individuals or interferes with learning or work. #J-18808-Ljbffr Somerville Public Schools
