Assistant Environmental Manager

GAI is seeking an Assistant Environmental Manager with 8‑10 years of experience to join our talented and energetic team. We are looking for a motivated person to build our business through sales, project management, and technical expertise. Excellent communication and organizational skills are required. Hybrid or remote arrangements will be considered. This position will either manage projects or work under the direction of a Project Manager, coordinating with clients and regulatory agencies to deliver projects on time, on budget, and of high quality. Job Duties 30% field-based work and 70% office-based work. Develop client relationships and support business development activities to obtain new work, primarily from existing clients as directed. Soil and groundwater investigation. Water quality sampling and analysis. Soil sampling and analysis. Environmental permitting. Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments. Provide technical services including wetland and stream delineations, endangered species, invasive species, sediment and erosion control planning, local, state and federal permitting, construction inspection and erosion control monitoring. Provide project or task management for all aspects of the project life cycle: planning, scope definition, execution, and delivery. Track progress toward milestones, budgetary guidelines or other performance indicators. Select, negotiate with, and oversee project activities of external subconsultants or vendors. May supervise staff and provide leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to direct reports or task managers. Perform work under minimal supervision; handle complex issues and refer them to higher-level staff. Weekly travel to varied job locations will be common. Overnight stays are likely. Travel will be necessary throughout the year and may include national travel. Travel Requirement Approximately 30‑40% travel, primarily during the growing season. National travel may be required. General Characteristics Assist the Project Manager as needed on all aspects of the project. Contribute ideas to improve productivity across teams, departments, groups, or divisions. Qualifications Minimum Years of Experience: 8‑10 years Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Sciences or a similar field. Bachelor of Environmental and Earth Science preferred. Licenses & Certifications: Driver's License required. Relevant professional license or certification in an applicable technical discipline is required (PE, PLS, PG, RLA, etc.). Preferred technical certifications include 40‑hour Hazardous Site Safety Training (29 CFR 1910.120), Wetland Delineation Training Course, Certified Soil Erosion Inspector, and PMP Certification. Technical Responsibilities Oversight of task managers’ tasks, coordination of project tasks, reviews of project documents, agency and subconsultant interface. Adjust project plans as changes are made. Working knowledge of project contract documents. Recruiting and retaining staff. Interpret top-level management strategy and translate it into everyday policies. Develop and implement day-to-day routines for a team, department, group, or division. Talent development: empower staff to become problem-solvers enhancing innovation and productivity. Oversee learning, coaching, and career progression. Project and Task Management Manage project tasks and deliverables. Management Responsibility Manage existing client relationships and prepare scopes, budgets, and schedules for specific tasks. Assist with supervision of staff to complete assigned tasks. Maintain GAI’s procedures and protocols and assist with all aspects of financials on projects. Provide guidance and oversight under Project Managers or subject matter experts. Monitor employee performance and ensure compliance with organizational guidelines. Inspire and encourage employees to perform at their best. Assign and supervise specific work tasks. Allocate resources within a team, department, group, or division. Report issues and performance to top-level management. Prioritize mental health, work‑life integration, and retention. Communication Skills Effective oral and written communication skills. Interact well with staff, clients, project managers, and departmental managers.
