Manager Nursing (RN) Emergency Department

At Houston Methodist, the Manager Nursing position is responsible for 24-hour comprehensive operational responsibility for the delivery and quality of patient care in the designated areas of responsibility. This registered nurse position fosters interdepartmental and interprofessional collaboration and participates in committees, representing the unit and nursing in a positive manner. The manager assists with developing and implementing performance initiatives to ensure optimal patient safety, outcomes and customer satisfaction and demonstrates leadership qualities and critical thinking. The manager responsibility includes managing the daily work activities of the unit staff, ensuring quality, productivity, functional excellence and efficiency while assisting management in accomplishing strategic and operational objectives. The manager provides guidance to staff, handles staffing, budget compliance, hiring and termination, coaching and counseling employees, and assists in the development and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure a safe and effective work environment. Additional responsibilities include implementing training, monitoring and operations initiatives that secure compliance with ethical and legal business practices, accreditation, regulatory and government regulations. Full-Time, Nights 11:00 pm–7:00 am FLSA Status Exempt Qualifications Education Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited school of Nursing Experience Three years’ experience in nursing, one year in a progressive leadership role in healthcare; for internal candidates, two years’ experience in nursing which includes proven leadership abilities such as charge nurse responsibilities. Licenses and Certifications Required RN – Registered Nurse, Texas State Licensure, Texas Board of Nursing PSV Compact Licensure – Must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days of establishing Texas residency. BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA). Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification (ANCC) within 1 year. Preferred ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA) as required by department. NIHSTROKE – National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification (AHA) as required by department. NVCRISIS – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI) as required by department. Knowledge and Abilities Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job. Essential Functions People Essential Functions Manage selection, scheduling, supervision, retention, and evaluation of employees; provide development and mentoring to meet department turnover goals. Maintain a competent and engaged employee group through regular meetings, performance appraisals, new hire feedback, coaching, counseling, and recognition. Facilitate and promote effective team dynamics and teambuilding; lead and facilitate department process improvements. Meet or exceed threshold goals for employee engagement indicators. Establish two-way communication with staff, provide coaching for effective communication and stress management practices. Service Essential Functions Plan and organize day-to-day department operations, schedule, and activities; set priorities and standards to ensure quality service and high customer/patient satisfaction. Drive service standards and activities to improve patient/customer satisfaction scores; serve on committees as department voice. Model service orientation, resolve concerns, complaints, or conflicts with patients, families, physicians, and team members. Maintain ongoing interactions with patients, families, physicians, and staff to improve care and service. Quality/Safety Essential Functions Ensure a safe and effective working environment; monitor and revise department safety plans and adherence to accreditation/regulatory guidelines. Use and optimize information systems to enhance operations; support performance improvement and data analysis. Proactively improve safe outcomes by monitoring workflows, reporting near misses, and applying lean principles. Monitor compliance with policies, procedures, and HR standards; take action upon non-compliance. Prepare measurable goals and action plans aligned with Houston Methodist priorities. Finance Essential Functions Assist in developing department budget; manage expenses within approved parameters and meet financial targets. Implement strategies to achieve financial targets and staffing needs, optimizing productivity and resource efficiency. Plan coverage to maximize presence of management and staff; develop staffing schedules reflecting cost-effectiveness. Growth/Innovation Essential Functions Identify and implement innovative solutions for practice or workflow changes; lead unit projects and shared governance activities. Evaluate processes, recommend improvements, and execute action plans with sustainable outcomes. Build strategic relationships across departments and units to achieve business goals. Identify developmental needs for self and staff; maintain and update individual development plans.
