Media Relations Coordinator

Media Relations Coordinator Responsibilities Media Operations and Outreach: Manages the process of receiving and distributing university press releases, media advisories, and other news items. Maintains accurate contact lists and oversees the centralized media contacts database and metrics tracking platform. Uploads releases to CMS and trains campus media relations personnel. Serves as initial point of contact for media inquiries across the university. Media Relations Support: Acts as first point of contact for incoming media requests via phone and email, triages inquiries, gathers details, and routes them to subject matter experts. Conducts research, assists in organizing press events, and manages logistics under senior staff direction. Media Monitoring and Reporting: Tracks earned media metrics, compiles daily news clippings for executives, prepares monthly media coverage roundups, and targets metric reports for events or issues using email templates and mailing lists. Collaboration and Coordination: Maintains internal organization for the media relations team, schedules meetings, keeps minutes, manages team calendar, and coordinates communications with campus partners. Writing and Editing: Produces original news content including explainers, Q&A, media pitches, and story roundups. Edits and proofreads content for clarity, accuracy, and style before publication. Other related functions as assigned. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a related field. Three years of experience in public affairs, including media relations, journalism, event coordination, and informational material preparation. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Accuracy in all phases of work. Professional interaction with faculty, staff, students, and the public. Preferred Qualifications More than three years of experience in public affairs or a related field. Experience with WordPress or similar CMS. Basic knowledge of HTML. Demonstrated interpersonal skills. Intermediate skills with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel). Basic database skills a plus. Experience using a project management system a plus. Familiarity with group email systems (Emma, Mailchimp, Constant Contact, or similar) a plus. Salary Range $60,000 + depending on qualifications Working Conditions May work around standard office conditions. Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation. Occasional overtime during peak periods. Position based in Austin, TX and required to work on campus. Benefits Retirement Plan Eligibility: Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) if at least 20 hours per week and 135 days in length.
