Cast Specialist / Senior - Pediatric Orthopedics

As a Cast Technician, you are a critical part of a highly skilled, sports medicine–trained, multidisciplinary team that includes orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and other rehabilitation specialists. Working closely with orthopedic physicians, Cast Technicians support timely, high-quality patient care by ensuring proper immobilization, comfort, and education throughout the treatment process. The Institute delivers comprehensive orthopedic and sports medicine services, including: Orthopedic injury evaluation and treatment Minimally invasive and operative orthopedic procedures Post-injury rehabilitation and physical therapy Sports concussion management Strength, conditioning, and return-to-play programs Performance testing and injury prevention services Sports nutrition support Cast Technician Experience In this fast-paced orthopedic setting, Cast Technicians are involved in: Application and removal of casts, splints, braces, and orthopedic devices Assisting providers during orthopedic evaluations and procedures Educating patients on cast care, skin care, and activity restrictions Monitoring for complications and promptly escalating concerns Collaborating with clinical staff to ensure efficient patient flow and high standards of care Advanced diagnostic imaging and an on-site ambulatory surgery center are located adjacent to the Institute, allowing for seamless coordination of care—from diagnosis through treatment and recovery. Individualized orthopedic care and customized treatment and training programs are delivered by experienced sports medicine‑trained orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, nutritionists, exercise physiologists, biomechanists, strength & conditioning coaches and athletic trainers. Position Summary Serves as a trained member of the orthopedic team who assists all health care professionals in delivering patient care and assuming appropriate responsibilities concerning all casting duties. Position Key Accountabilities Under a physician's direction, prepares, applies, removes and adjusts casts and splints as advised by physician. Assists with procedures, including wound care and fracture reductions as advised by physician Prepares and applies orthopedic appliances, including durable medical equipment such as pre-operative braces, crutches and other soft goods. Conducts specialized measurements for custom brace fitting. Instructs patients in cast care and use of orthopedic appliances, including walking with casts, braces and crutches. Prepares traction and rigs pulleys, ropes and frames to assemble fracture beds as requested by the physician. May assess patients in traction, detect deficiencies in the equipment and make adjustments as needed. Responsible for cleaning and stocking the cast and soft goods room. Responsible for ordering special supplies or equipment, including DME (durable medical equipment) to maintain inventory appropriate with patient volume. Responsible for coordinating collection of patient data as required for billing of specialty equipment. Assists in maintaining a clean and safe environment. Practices positive customer and peer relations. Respects and supports patient rights. Participates in and supports continuous quality improvement activities at the clinic/departmental level. Demonstrates acceptable productivity and practices cost containment. Functions as an interdependent and supportive team member. With appropriate MA certification (completion of an approved MA training program) and having passed the MA competency evaluation, can practice within the limitations of the certification. Other duties as assigned. Certification/Skills A strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology and expertise in the different materials and equipment involved in casts, splints and braces. Considerable knowledge of casting materials is necessary. Basic Life Support (BLS) by American Heart Association (AHA) required Minimum Education High school diploma Minimum Experience One year experience in a hospital, clinic or medical practice setting. Physical Requirements Exerts up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds frequently and/or up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects. Security Sensitive 51.215 and Texas Government Code 411.094. To the extent that a position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Texas Business and Commerce Code 117.001(2), the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired for and to continue to be employed in that position.
