Summary Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol, Laredo Sector, Mission Readiness Operations, located in Laredo, TX. Learn more about this agency Duties Help In this position, you will execute a wide range of finance-related administrative, management, and analytical activities that support Mission Readiness Operations for the U.S. Border Patrol. By improving budget formulation, financial analysis, and workflow management, the position helps ensure Border Patrol sectors have the resources and processes needed to meet mission and personnel requirements. This position starts at a salary of $52,413.00 (GS-7, Step 1) to $83,349.00 (GS-9, Step 10) GS Salary: Visit this link to view the locality pay tables by geographic area. A Mission Support Specialist (Finance), you will be responsible for carrying out administrative and analytical duties that support the budgeting and resource management needs of the U.S. Border Patrol. Typical duties will include:
- Preparing budget reports using various databases and automated systems, assisting in analyzing financial trends, and compiling data for management analysis.
- Assisting in developing budget briefings, project papers, budget status dashboards, and related correspondence, and collaborating with the budget team on finance submissions.
- Performing purchase cardholder responsibilities, researching applicable acquisition policies, creating Internal Recurring Obligations (IROs), reviewing certified IRO invoices, and forecasting IRO budgetary requirements.
- Supporting the travel manager by coordinating travel authorizations and vouchers in the organization's travel system, reviewing travel documents, and conducting monthly travel card reviews to identify misuse and delinquencies.

- Applying basic administrative processes (such as staffing support, time and attendance tracking, and travel or logistics processing) to support day-to-day office operations;
- Reviewing and verifying recurring transactions or obligations for accuracy, identifying discrepancies, and assisting with corrective actions;
- Using standard office software (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint) to create and maintain spreadsheets, reports, and presentation materials;
- Gathering, organizing, and summarizing data (such as staffing, procurement, or activity information) for use in estimates, reports, or justifications;
- Using an automated system to help prepare and review authorizations and supporting documents and to generate basic activity or status reports.
- Applying administrative and budget procedures (e.g., staffing, time and attendance, travel, relocation, and event planning) to manage and support day-to-day financial and operational activities;
- Analyzing and evaluating recurring financial obligations to verify accuracy, identify discrepancies, and recommend or implement corrective actions;
- Using standard office software (such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) to develop and maintain electronic files, financial spreadsheets, and presentation or briefing materials for management;
- Collaborating with a budget team in a requirements-based budgeting process, including compiling and analyzing staffing, procurement, and travel data to develop or justify budget submissions;
- Using an automated travel system to prepare, review, and generate reports on monthly, quarterly, or annual travel activity and delinquencies, and communicating findings and recommendations to management.
- Meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process; and
- Meet all applicable Time in Grade requirements (current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the federal service) by 06/25/2026.
