Fire Prevention Specialist
State of Alaska
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING: Working under the direction of the Bureau Administrator, Fire Training Specialists play a vital role in coordinating Fire Service Training, Fire Prevention and Community Risk Reduction initiatives, and Public Education programs. Key responsibilities include: Reviewing, developing, and coordinating training programs aligned with both local and nationally adopted standards. Designing, implementing, and delivering comprehensive training curricula to meet the needs of the fire service, the public, and industry stakeholders. Supporting and advancing initiatives that enhance fire prevention and community safety through innovative education and outreach efforts. This position is pivotal in shaping the knowledge, skills, and preparedness of fire service professionals while fostering safer communities. OUR ORGANIZATION, MISSION, AND CULTURE: The Division of Fire and Life Safety, operating under the Office of the State Fire Marshal, is steadfast in its mission to prevent the loss of life and property caused by fires and explosions. We pursue this critical goal through three core pillars: Enforcement, Engineering, and Education, working collaboratively to enhance fire safety across the state. The Bureau of Fire Accreditation Standards and Training serves as the cornerstone of our educational efforts. Its mission is to deliver exceptional fire training and public education services to Alaska’s fire service and diverse communities, ensuring every Alaskan is equipped with the knowledge and skills to reduce risks and respond effectively in emergencies. Our Culture At the heart of our organization lies a dedication to service, integrity, and innovation. We believe in the power of collaboration and prioritize continuous learning to ensure excellence in every program and initiative we deliver. We are proud to embrace diversity and honor the unique challenges and strengths of Alaska’s communities, from bustling urban centers to the most remote villages. This understanding shapes our approach, enabling us to build safer, more resilient communities while fostering the professional growth of our fire service partners. Our efforts go beyond fire prevention—we are cultivating a culture of preparedness, empowering individuals to act confidently in emergencies, and safeguarding lives and property for future generations. By combining dedication, expertise, and a shared mission, we are making Alaska a safer place for all. THE BENEFITS OF JOINING OUR TEAM: As a key member of our organization, the successful candidate will have the rewarding responsibility of delivering comprehensive fire service training across a significant geographic region of the state. This role offers a flexible work schedule tailored to meet the needs of diverse host organizations. To ensure the highest level of expertise, career-enhancing training opportunities will be provided to maintain and expand your skills and knowledge. This position uniquely empowers you to make a meaningful impact on the Alaska Fire Service by delivering essential and relevant training. Your efforts will directly contribute to saving lives, protecting property, and fostering safer communities across the state. THE WORKING CONDITIONS YOU CAN EXPECT: This position is based at the Department of Public Safety Headquarters in Anchorage, offering a dynamic and collaborative environment. A typical day includes planning and delivering impactful fire service training classes, maintaining, and preparing essential training equipment, and providing technical assistance to local fire service agencies. A unique and rewarding aspect of this role is the opportunity to travel to Alaska’s rural villages. These visits allow you to engage directly with diverse communities, adapt training to meet their specific needs, and build meaningful relationships while supporting fire safety efforts in some of the state’s most remote and underserved areas. Working in a team-oriented setting, you’ll collaborate with dedicated staff members to achieve shared goals, all while making a tangible difference in the safety and preparedness of Alaska’s communities. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR: We are seeking a highly organized, self-motivated professional with a deep passion for the Fire Service and Fire Service Training. The ideal candidate will have proven experience in teaching and training within the fire and EMS sectors, combined with a strong commitment to empowering others through education. We are looking for a collaborative team player who excels at creative problem-solving and thrives in dynamic environments. The ability to adapt to new challenges, think critically, and work effectively in a team-oriented setting is essential. A willingness and enthusiasm to travel, including to remote and rural communities, is critical to this role, as it offers the opportunity to make a direct and meaningful impact across Alaska. REQUIREMENTS: An Associate degree or the equivalent from an accredited institution in Fire Science Technology or a closely related field; AND Three years of fire prevention or suppression experience, one year of which was in a capacity as a trainer or instructor.
