Responsibilities The RN’s practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics. The RN possesses professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the care of the patient population served. Responsibilities include recording patients’ medical history and symptoms, performing diagnostic tests, analyzing results, operating medical equipment, administering treatment and medications, and facilitating patient follow‑up and rehabilitation. The RN establishes or contributes to care plans, including medication administration, IV line management, therapy and treatment administration, observation and documentation, and consulting with physicians and other clinicians. The RN teaches patients and families how to manage illnesses or injuries, explains post‑treatment and home‑care needs, diet, nutrition, and exercise programs, and self‑administration of medication and therapy. The RN provides direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides regarding patient care and delegates when appropriate. The RN supports clinical knowledge advancement, precepts new hire staff and students, assists staff and students in completing competency tasks, and continues to enhance knowledge in nursing management and patient care. The RN may seek continual improvement of patient outcomes and quality of care. Essential Functions Collect health data systematically, prioritize data collection based on patient condition or needs, involve the family, analyze assessment data to determine diagnoses, and utilize nursing diagnoses to develop, implement, evaluate, and revise individualized patient plans of care. Perform interventions, initiate treatments, medications, emergency resuscitative measures, and maintain continuity of care with evidence‑based, family‑centered, culturally relevant approaches. Provide physical, emotional, spiritual, and social‑cultural support. Document observations and interventions. Evaluate quality and effectiveness of care plans, maintain current nursing practice knowledge, and uphold ethical principles. Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members, peers, and other health care providers through preceptor/mentor programs. Apply evidence‑based research to improve nursing practice and patient outcomes. Consider safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning and delivering patient care efficiently. Qualifications Education: All Diploma and ADN hires must complete a BSN within 60 months of hire or have 5 or more years of registered nurse experience (including direct patient care or indirect RN roles) at the time of hire. Required and Associates or Diploma in Nursing. All staff with direct responsibility for the care of stroke patients must refer to the addendum for stroke‑specific education requirements. Experience: Other – >10 months med‑surg or acute specialty setting. Required: 1 year RN experience for all float positions. Licenses and Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required, unit‑specific certification as required by specialty area. Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State or Compact State of Arizona required. National certification for unit‑specific patient population required. Preferred: Bachelors in nursing (BSN).
