Accessible Technology Assistant (COMPUTER RESC SPEC 1)

$30.84 - $42.34 per hour

Under general supervision, demonstrate, provide training, assist students with set‑up and configuration, and trouble‑shoot a wide variety of accessible technologies for students with disabilities; prepare and present training materials. Train SDC students individually and in small groups to use accessible technology and software such as Livescribe Smartpens, SensusAccess, ClaroRead, Otter.ai, Sonocent, Dragon Naturally Speaking, and JAWS. Assist in coordinating the conversion and distribution of electronic/alternative media for students with disabilities (expediting and tracking the conversion process, including seeking publisher permission, researching outside sources, verifying copyright‑required proof of purchase, scanning and editing, and ensuring timely project completion and delivery). Coordinate loan of accessible equipment to SDC students; keep records, check out/in equipment; maintain equipment and inventory. Other duties as assigned. Overview The Student Disability Center (SDC) within the division of Student Affairs oversees the provision of academic accommodations, adjustments, and services for approximately 4,100 disabled students to facilitate equal access to the University's educational programs. Through an interactive process, students receive specialized academic support services and adjustments, disability management counseling, academic advising specific to disability impact, and the provision of accessible/assistive technology options and training. Responsibilities Demonstrate, provide training, and assist students with set‑up, configuration, and troubleshooting of accessible technologies. Develop and present training materials for students. Coordinate conversion and distribution of electronic/alternative media, including publisher permissions, research, copyright proof, scanning, editing, and project delivery. Coordinate loan of accessible equipment, maintain equipment inventory, and manage records. Provide instructional support individually and in small groups. Other duties as assigned. Key Responsibilities 50% Provide Training/Assistance to Students with Disabilities in using Accessible and Assistive Technologies. 50% Assist in Coordinating Alternative Media, Communications, Record‑Keeping, and Other Accommodations; Various Departmental Needs. Qualifications High School Diploma and/or equivalent experience. Minimum 2+ years experience in a college setting in Disability services or similar environment. Experience providing tech support/troubleshooting for devices and multiple operating systems, software, apps, and cloud storage services for students who use personal equipment. Experience using accessible/assistive devices, software, apps, online services, and web/mobile applications such as Livescribe Smartpens, assistive listening devices, ABBYY, ClaroRead, Dragon Naturally Speaking, JAWS, SensusAccess, Google Docs, Box.com, etc. Experience creating electronic text and alternative formats using OCR to convert to .doc, .rtf, .pdf, .jpeg, .mp3, .epub, .mobi, Braille. Experience interacting with individuals of varying ages, roles, and cultural backgrounds via email, telephone, video conferencing, VOIP, or IM, and researching new technologies. Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, ability to manage multiple priorities, provide training and support for accessible technologies, respond effectively to inquiries, and maintain confidentiality. Interpersonal and oral communication skills to provide individual and small group technical training and support. Knowledge of confidentiality requirements and ability to protect and maintain confidential student information. Preferred Qualifications Experience entering data into a database, preparing and presenting training materials, and using office equipment (fax, copier, scanner). Experience preparing accessible documents, reports, and spreadsheets and editing and proofreading using MS Office or Google Docs. Ability to learn database(s) specific to Student Disability Center functions and other specialized technology. Knowledge of accommodations process, SDC policies, procedures, and services for students. Knowledge of University policies and procedures and applicable federal mandates for electronic accessibility.
