Bridge Geotechnical Engineer I, II, III, or IV - Bridge Division

Job Title Bridge Geotechnical Engineer I – IV (Texas Department of Transportation – Bridge Division) Position Information The Bridge Division is seeking a Bridge Geotechnical Engineer to work in Austin, TX. The role involves developing geotechnical design policy and standards, performing in‑house geotechnical analyses and designs, and supporting construction and maintenance activities across Texas. The candidate will collaborate with a team serving 25 districts and the State of Texas, applying current industry and TxDOT specifications while advancing design and construction practices through innovation and technology. Work Location: 6230 East Stassney Lane, Austin, TX 78744 Salary Range: $65,104 – $124,600 per year (based on level and qualifications) Responsibilities Perform geotechnical engineering in design, construction, and maintenance activities. Ensure compliance with federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines. Coordinate with governmental officials and private entities. Conduct geotechnical analyses, design bridge foundations and retaining walls, and review shop drawings. Develop and review engineering documents, correspondence, reports, and remediation plans. Assist in specification development, present and represent TxDOT at meetings, and monitor consultant progress. Perform on‑site engineering reviews and provide technical support. Ascertain responsibilities for each level: Level I: Standard practices with limited supervision. Level II: Independent assignments with occasional supervisory referral. Level III: Advanced and complex work with self‑directed priorities. Level IV: Highly advanced projects, project management oversight, and consultant coordination. Minimum Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related science. A higher degree is acceptable by Texas PELS. Experience: 4–7 years of engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience. Graduate‑level education may be substituted for experience at a 1:1 ratio. Licenses & Certifications: Valid driver’s license and the ability to operate a state vehicle. Professional Engineer license (or requirement to obtain within six months if issued in another state). Technical knowledge in hydraulic, hydrologic, and geotechnical design; bridge construction methods; foundation analysis; bridge inspection and appraisal; and state and federal regulations. Physical Requirements & Working Conditions Work in indoor and outdoor environments with exposure to weather conditions. Light work: lift up to 20 lbs; frequent lifting of 10 lbs or less. Repetitive motions, bending, stooping, and crouching required. Must pass a pre‑employment physical and drug test; random drug screening applies. Travel up to 25% of the time.
