Sawmill Supervisor

Founded in 1855, Collins is family-owned and produces softwood and hardwood products at their facilities in Chester, California, Lakeview, Oregon and Kane, Pennsylvania. In Chester, Collins has the Builders Supply retail hardware and building materials store. Collins is highly respected for their sustainable forest management, practiced across their 370,000 acres of FSC‑certified lands in California, Oregon, and Pennsylvania. Position Summary The Sawmill Supervisor will manage the day-to-day operations of the log yard and sawmill while promoting safety, quality, productivity, and employee development. Duties/Responsibilities Lead a safe working environment: train employees in safe equipment operation; motivate employees to lead the operation to superior safety performance; engage in continuing education and improvement to processes and work procedures; and lead safety behavior by example. Manage and direct process flow of the sawmill to meet established performance objectives. In cooperation with the QC Supervisor, research and implement improved operational methods to improve lumber recovery, grade values, and perform cost management. Promote team communication between departments. Process employee time and attendance reports. Support operations in key variable tracking and data analysis. Act as backup/relief for sawmill positions to ensure continual operations. Maintain the working relationship with the bargaining unit of the Chester, CA by following the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Perform additional duties as required by supervisor. On-site attendance is essential to effectively perform the listed duties and responsibilities. Supervisory Responsibilities Recruit, hire, and manage log yard and sawmill employees. Responsible for performance management of direct reports in accordance with company values, objectives, and policies. Provide mentoring, coaching, training, and support consistent with developing and sustaining a high‑performing and accountable team. Required Skills and Abilities Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage and motivate team members. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Strong reasoning and problem‑solving skills; ability to think creatively and find innovative solutions to complex problems. Strong time‑management and organizational skills. Proficient with Microsoft 365. Education and Experience Five (5) years of experience in a log yard and sawmill environment. Environmental Conditions May be exposed to dust, noise, trip hazards, and variable weather and temperatures. Required Personal Protective Equipment Individuals must be willing to wear the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times. Positions may require additional PPE at specific times. Examples of PPE which may be required include, but are not limited to, hand protection, eye protection, hearing protection, a hard hat, foot protection, and a face shield.
