Founding Backend Engineer

Job Overview We’re looking for a Founding Backend Engineer to join our team in San Francisco. Responsibilities We’re building a database company. We need someone who enjoys hard problems, has large scope and agency, and has experience working in Clojure. Our current stack includes client SDKs, a CLI tool, and a web GUI all written in Typescript; a Clojure server managing WebSocket connections, parsing queries, running permissions, and broadcasting novelty; and an AWS Aurora Postgres backend. Key backend challenges include: Handling more than 10k connections and improving infrastructure to support 100k+ connections across queries, transactions, permissions, and reactive layers. Upgrading the permissions system based on Google CEL to a more powerful DSL similar to Figma’s solution. Enabling BYOP (Bring Your Own Postgres) so users can plug their own database into the sync engine. Delivering observability tools for developers to identify and tune problematic queries. Requirements • Experience in Clojure is essential. Location & Benefits Location: San Francisco, CA. In-person only; open to relocation only.
