Summary You will serve as a Supervisory Park Ranger (Protection), this position is in the Division of Ranger Activities of the Law Enforcement & Resource Protection Branch within the Shenandoah National Park. Major Duties Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following: Detection, investigation, apprehension, and prosecution under applicable laws, rules, and regulations enacted to insure the protection and safe use of National Park resources. Educate, interpret, and inform visitors about resources, conservation, laws, and regulations. Potential for supervision of emergency medical services program, technical rescue operations, search and rescue program, helicopter rescue operations. Potential for supervision of the preventative search and rescue operation including seasonal staff hiring and supervision. Functions as a first line law enforcement supervisor. Education National Park Service Full Type I Law Enforcement Commission: Must currently possess or previously held (within the past three years), a FLETC issued Land Management Police Training, full Type I Law Enforcement Commission or equivalent; or be qualified to receive a Type 1/ Full Authority Commission upon appointment. Requirements Must provide proof of U.S. citizenship. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service. Must possess and maintain a current EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN or higher certification. Pre-employment and random drug testing is required. You will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test is received. A physical examination will be required, or a statement regarding physical ability will need to be completed. You must maintain physical fitness standards throughout employment. You are required to wear a uniform and comply with uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. Firearm qualification and certification are required for the role, and ongoing proficiency must be maintained You must at least 21 years old. You must be free of any domestic violence convictions. Must maintain a delegation of law enforcement authority. Prior to appointment, you must be determined physically fit by an authorized physician to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties, pass a medical examination, and pass the Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB). To pass the Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB): the PEB is a fitness test consisting of five different components: 1) agility run - measures the ability to get up from the ground and sprint while changing directions; 2) bench press - measures upper body strength for one repetition; 3) 1.5 mile run - measures cardio/respiratory fitness; 4) sit and reach - measures flexibility in the lower back, legs and shoulders; and 5) body composition - measures body fat. Prior to appointment, selectees will be tested in all five components, and must pass the agility run, bench press and 1.5 mile run in the 25th percentile. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. You may be required to travel overnight away from home occasionally per month. Benefits This is a secondary/administrative law enforcement position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS). While secondary positions are not subject to the maximum entry age (MEA) policy, applicants must have prior service in a primary position and meet the transfer requirement for movement from a primary to a secondary position to be eligible for special retirement coverage. Applicants may meet qualification requirements but may not be eligible for special retirement coverage; if such an applicant is selected, they will be placed in the regular retirement system. For FERS eligibility, an employee must transfer directly (without a break in service exceeding three days) from a primary position to a secondary position, complete three years of service in a primary rigorous position-including any such service during which no FERS deductions were withheld-and must be continuously employed in a secondary position since moving from a primary rigorous position, except for any break in employment from a secondary position that began with involuntary separation (not for cause). It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure this office has sufficient information to determine retirement status and prevent loss of benefits, typically by submitting an SF-50 or other documentation demonstrating work history in approved covered positions. Physical Demands: The incumbent is routinely required to perform physically rigorous assignments. The work requires physical exertion, such as regular and recurring long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, rocky surfaces, and mountainous terrain; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities; carrying of equipment weighing 50 pounds or less; and recurring lifting of moderately heavy items such as fire packs, litters and rope bags. The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities such as above‑average agility and dexterity. Mandatory physical fitness and medical standards apply to the incumbent of this position. Work Environment: The work environment involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks or discomforts such as low temperatures, high winds, adverse weather conditions, falling limbs or trees and similar situations. Employees may require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts or machines; with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals, etc. The employee may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, gloves, helmets, or shields.
