Position description The Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning (LAEP) at UC Berkeley seeks to fill a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to contemporary design discourse on “Landscape and Eco-Technology” through disciplinary engagement, teaching, research and/or practice. This position will allow the department to carry forward its legacy of leadership in service of the State of California, the nation, and the wider world. It also will further the department's disciplinary knowledge on public infrastructure through teaching, design, and/or research in material, vegetal, topographical, and hydrologic landscape systems. We seek a colleague whose approach encompasses cultural meaning and critical discourse as well as performance‑based assessment and design engagement. The Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning at UC Berkeley is California's flagship program. As an accredited professional program in an R1 institution, the department expects its faculty to carry out research and/or creative practice that is recognized nationally and internationally and to support pedagogy that critically advances the role of Eco-Technology in contemporary design, praxis, and landscape performance. Landscape architecture has a long and distinguished history at Berkeley, starting in 1913 and boasting a renowned cast of alumni and faculty. Today, we offer degree programs at the undergraduate, Masters, and PhD levels. As one of the founding departments in the College of Environmental Design, established in 1959, interdisciplinarity is part of our ethos and public engagement of our mission. Building on the legacy of environmental design, we tackle contemporary challenges from climate adaptation to societal crises across methods, technologies, and media ( Landscape and Eco-Technology is integral to the resilience, performance, and equity of urban systems. By considering scales and typologies—from site-based construction practices to national climate adaptation strategies, circularity, and carbon policy, we can establish partnerships and enrich disciplinary discourse. Eco-Technology comes into play across topographic, hydrologic, vegetated, and material systems that define contemporary landscape architectural praxis. It requires a synthetic understanding of how landscape systems are connected and are comprehensively designed, modeled, and prototyped. Our department recognizes Eco-Technology as a core competency within landscape architecture, one that is indispensable to the creation of livable, inclusive, and healthy sustainable cities. The successful candidate will help develop courses in the area of Eco-Technology as well as contribute to the department and beyond through collaboration and mentoring. We recognize that scholarship in landscape architecture encompasses research, applied research, and creative practice. Similarly, output spans a variety of media, methods, and themes, from fabrication and prototyping, to material craft, built work, and code. Position responsibilities include foundational and advanced instruction in topography, materials, and construction across the graduate and undergraduate LAEP curriculum. The typical mode of instruction is carried through design studio, lecture course, seminar, and advising. The position also aims to establish cross-disciplinary research initiatives that advance knowledge of landscape technology as it intersects with human health, law, design arts, engineering, material science, and environmental policy, among other cultural practices. This faculty member should be positioned to engage in cross-disciplinary discourse, teaching, and research, with an emerging record of scholarship, public engagement, and/or built works commensurate with expectations for a tenure-track professor at UC Berkeley. Shared governance and collegiality are paramount at Berkeley and Senate Faculty are expected to serve in the department, college, university, profession, and broader community.
