Assistant Professor of Finance

Position Summary Under the general direction of the Dean and the Chair of the Department of Economics and Business Administration (EBA) in the Delaplaine School of Business and Communication (DSBC) at HoodCollege, we invite applications for an Assistant Professor of Finance. This is a full-time, tenure-track faculty position responsible for teaching finance and related business courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. It requires the candidate to engage in scholarly activity, advise and mentor students, and contribute service to the department, DSBC, and Hood College. The candidate will be expected to teach courses in financial management, business finance, investment analysis, fixed income, financial derivatives, and portfolio management, as well as other business courses as needed, at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. The ability to teach courses in accounting is a plus. Our undergraduate business programs and MBA program are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). The successful candidate must be student-focused and deeply committed to the mission of the Delaplaine School of Business and Communication and Hood College. At Hood College and the DSBC, we prioritize a student-centric approach in all aspects of education, from classroom instruction to individual student engagement. We are seeking individuals with an earned doctorate in a relevant field who are passionate about teaching. The ideal candidate will have the opportunity to contribute not only within the department and DSBC but also to the broader campus curriculum. In addition to pursuing excellence in teaching, the successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to scholarship and its classroom applications. Additionally, the successful candidate will mentor and advise undergraduate Business majors in both curricular and professional matters and may also advise graduate research. The candidate must show initiative in service to the department, DSBC, and Hood College. ***The expected start date is August 2027*** Essential Duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Teaching/Instruction (60%) Teach courses in financial management, business finance, investment analysis, and portfolio management at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Ability and willingness to teach accounting courses will be preferred. The successful candidate will teach 21credit hours per academic year. Demonstrate an ability or potential for quality teaching. Plan course syllabi and assignments for the semester to meet Hood College and DSBC curriculum requirements, utilizing a variety of teaching techniques. Evaluate students' learning styles, interests, aptitudes, temperament, and individual characteristics to determine suitable levels of instruction and assignments. Instruct students in course content and provide learning opportunities in and out of the classroom to achieve course objectives. Encourage class participation and assist, as appropriate, in helping students complete class assignments. Manage classroom interactions and establish and maintain an climate that encourages learning. Critique performance on various assignments to measure the quality of learning, build thinking skills, challenge students' assumptions, and reinforce concepts, which may include practical application of new skills. Maintain regular office hours and contact with students and work with students to address problems and resolve issues. Accompany students on field trips or other off-campus learning opportunities, as appropriate. Determine grades for assignments and overall achievement in class and provide appropriate documentation of grades to students and the department, as appropriate. Research and Scholarship (20%) Maintain active and ongoing field-specific research to enhance the general body of knowledge. Pursue publication through a variety of venues, including traditional media such as journals, business periodicals, and conference proceedings, as well as new media and online outlets. Service (20%) Mentor and advise undergraduate students on curricular and professional matters and, as appropriate, advise graduate research. Support and participate in DSBC and Hood College committees and/or professional organizations to develop professional partnerships and meet academic needs. Support DSBC and Hood College initiatives to recruit and retain talented students. Serve as an active member of the Hood College community. Perform other job-related duties as assigned. Qualifications Candidates must have strong organizational skills and a proven ability to work collaboratively with partners across campus in support of Hood College’s mission as a student-centered, liberal arts institution with a focus on professional education. To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience The successful candidate will have a doctorate in finance or a related field in business or economics. Advanced ABDs and candidates with a master’s degree in finance with significant teaching and/or professional experience will also be considered. Candidates should have teaching experience and familiarity with small, liberal arts college environment. Preferred Skills and Characteristics An accounting background and/or the ability and interest to teach introductory-level accounting courses in addition to finance would be an additional asset. Technology Skills Proficient in MS Office tools (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), e-mail, and the Internet, in addition to professional software used in research and/or teaching. Ability to learn new applications quickly, including organization-wide information systems and department-specific software applications. Language Skills Strong oral and written communication skills are important. Ability to effectively provide information and respond positively to questions from both external and internal customers, both in person and by phone. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Mathematical Skills Proficient with statistical and financial concepts. Must have the ability to apply those concepts to tracking, projections, goalsetting, and interpreting reports. Must be able to draw conclusions from reports and make cost-effective decisions regarding programs. Reasoning Ability Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a number of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to work independently and as a member of a group in developing and executing project plans. Ability to work in the theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate. Compensation The salary for this position ranges from $80,000 - $85,000 depending on circumstances including an applicant’s skills and qualifications, certain degrees and certifications, prior job experience, training, and other relevant factors. Additional compensation for work completed beyond the minimum contracted teaching load may be provided. Hood College has provided a compensation range representing its good faith estimate of what the College may pay for the position at the time of posting. The College may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range.
