What would you do as a Heavy Equipment Operator Department Head As the Heavy Equipment Operator Department Head at Bridgerland Technical College, you will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the heavy equipment training program. This includes developing and implementing curriculum that aligns with industry standards and safety regulations. You will lead, mentor, and support instructors while ensuring they have the resources necessary to deliver high‑quality education. Daily tasks will involve conducting safety inspections of equipment, coordinating hands‑on training sessions, and evaluating student progress. You will be expected to foster a collaborative learning environment, addressing any student concerns while maintaining a focus on customer satisfaction. Knowledge and skills required for the position are: General: Administers affairs of the appropriate college department Arranges schedules of classes and assigns teaching staff to conduct classes Prepares lists of budgetary and other needs Conducts regular departmental meetings and keeps appropriate records of such meetings Performs other administrative duties in addition to teaching assignments Plans, provides, and evaluates, with the active participation of department staff as appropriate, the service to students Maintain connections with industry professionals to stay abreast of industry changes, easily adapt to those changes, and progress to meet the needs of the industry workforce demands Teaching: Plans, develops, and presents organized learning opportunities for students in accordance with approved course outlines in topics relating to their specific curriculum Supervises the safety of students in the classroom/lab Plans, implements, and monitors for all courses (in conjunction with the staff of the department) appropriate syllabi and instructional materials, which include clearly identified objectives shared with the students Encourages varied methods of teaching and learning, appropriate to the abilities and aspirations of the students and which enable them to take maximum responsibility for their own learning Prepares (in conjunction with the appropriate members of the instructional team of the college) the annual analysis of the staffing needs of the department according to the current staffing policy of the college Communication Responsibilities: Establishes a professional rapport with students, staff, and Administration with respect for all parties Communicates effectively at all levels of responsibility including the ability to communicate in English (both orally and in writing) using proper grammar and vocabulary Completes required reporting in a timely manner Answers correspondence promptly Participates in department and college meetings as appropriate Schedule and participate in the work of the program advisory committees Represents the college to external constituencies as appropriate Seek to promote a spirit of collegiality in dealings with college staff Protect confidentiality of all student records and information required by local, state, and national regulations StudentAssessment, Reportingand Supporting: Ensures the efficient administration of a program Provides student support in assessment, academic progress, attendance, and soft skills Ensures accurate and up‑to‑date records of student achievement and attendance are kept within the department Support and notify program graduates of job placement opportunities Communicates outcome results including completion, placement and licensure (when applicable) to Student Services in a timely manner (within the one‑year reporting period) Ensures identification of students who are experiencing difficulties and verifies support and direction is given to them, with notification provided to appropriate personnel Leadership Mentors faculty in maintaining a positive attitude, leading by example, demonstrating support for Administration Maintains positive, cooperative, and mutually supportive relationships with Administration, staff, students, parents, and external parties Serve as a role model for students and staff by dressing professionally Demonstrating the importance of continually learning working collaboratively with college staff, faculty, and Administration Accepting responsibility for program outcomes and reporting Assures compliance with accreditation standards including the self‑study narrative, compliance exhibits, outcome verification, advisory meetings, employer verification, form submission, etc. Verifies compliance with college publication standards Finance and Resource Management: Manages the budget devolved to the department, ensuring its efficient use and that limits are not exceeded Orders and allocates materials and equipment as appropriate Advises Administration of the college on the resource and accommodation requirements of the department Provides departmental statistics as required for college bodies, outside agencies, etc. Maintains an up‑to‑date inventory of equipment and resources Ensures, as far as possible, that the department equipment and resources are maintained in good order and that the rooms allocated for the department’s use are cared for and offer an attractive and educationally stimulating environment for students Provides annual inventory data (when applicable) to the Accounting department by appropriate deadline Educational Resources: Responsible for the implementation and coordination of educational resources Maintains educational resources which may include instructional materials, textbooks, course materials, modules, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other tools Provides annual inventories as requested Requests repair, maintenance, and/or replacement of educational resources, equipment, and/or supplies as needed Ensures educational resources meet required and appropriate safety standards Personnel: Contributes to the process of recruiting, interviewing, and appointing staff to the department Designs and implements an appropriate training plan for the introduction of new staff and (where appropriate) staff who are taking on new responsibilities, in consultation with the appropriate member of the Administration of the college Participates in conducting department performance appraisals in a fair and consistent manner that encourages growth and accountability Assists departmental faculty/staff in developing and implementing improvement goals Coordinates work distribution arising from staff absences Ensures equitable, varied teaching loads within the department Ensures adherence to college policies, regulations, and plans regarding student and staff health and safety Make your move
