Precision Metal Fabrication Operator

#8488 Lafayette, Indiana, United States Job Description Assist in the fabrication of parts for Wabash trailers at the direction of a Metal Fab Coordinator or Supervisor. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Perform a variety of semi-skilled manual duties requiring knowledge of techniques, tools, equipment, and safety precautions. Operate lasers, turrets, presses, shears, and other equipment as assigned, including set up and preventive maintenance. Execute primary job functions requiring independent judgment. Maintain work quality consistent with Wabash standards and supervised by a supervisor, area manager, or department head. Understand and interpret blueprints. Adhere to the general safety plan. Assist in the manufacture of metal parts. Work in adverse climate conditions (hot, cold, dark, loud, etc.). Report defects and repair needs to production and maintenance leadership. Wear all required PPE such as shoes, gloves, sleeves, safety glasses, face shields, respirators, hearing protection, heat‑shielding hoods, jackets, and fall protection. Demonstrate and embrace Wabash values and leadership principles in daily activities. Flex work schedule as needed and complete duties in accordance with safety policies. Hammers Wrenches Multi‑head drills Tuggers Circular saws Drills Impacts Rivet guns Staplers Caulk applicators Routers Qualifications High school degree or GED equivalent (basic reading, writing, and verbal skills). General computer skills (Excel and Word). Ability to read and use tape measure, calipers, and gauge equipment. Ability to read and follow engineering drawings. Strong critical thinking and problem‑solving skills. Exercise independent judgment when performing responsibilities. Perform work at a quality level that meets or exceeds Wabash and ISO standards. Adopt a winning‑together mentality and eliminate shift‑versus‑shift attitudes. Share information with others to help them perform responsibilities safely and efficiently. Cope successfully with unexpected events during the day. Work independently as well as collaboratively with techs, operators, maintenance, and engineers. Resolve conflicting priorities and accomplish tasks on time. Maintain high standards for minimal unplanned absences. Lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Knowledge, Training, Skills and/or Experience The role requires climbing to a height of over six (6) feet using a ladder or scaffolding, bending, stooping, and climbing to reach the underside of the tanks. Physical demands include bending, stooping, and climbing for about thirty percent of the shift and standing for about seventy percent. Working conditions may involve loud noise, welding, paint fumes, and grinding dust. Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and vibrations may occur. Extreme temperatures, high noise levels, and low lighting are common. All employees on the production floor must wear required PPE. Physical Demands Must stand, walk, lean, push, climb, sit, bend, kneel, stoop, and operate tools for the full shift. Full range of motion in arms and hands is essential. Must lift up to 50 lbs.
