MLT Evening Shift Full Time

This job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by employees in the Laboratory Services department. This is not an exhaustive list of duties and responsibilities; LCMC Health reserves the right to amend or change responsibilities as necessary. Testing Procedures Ensures specimens received are acceptable for testing by applying appropriate criteria. Labels, accession, and distributes specimens to maintain patient identification integrity. Operates primary and secondary instrumentation proficiently. Reports test results within established departmental turnaround times after verifying documentation. Recognizes and refers abnormal, unusual, and critical results to supervisor. Performs latex serologies and rapid antigen testing within departmental policies. Initiates orders for blood/blood components from the appropriate supplier. Follows universal precautions and infection control policies. Disinfects counter tops daily with appropriate cleaner. Preventive Maintenance/Quality & Control/Quality Assurance Operates, calibrates, conducts performance checks, and maintains laboratory instruments after orientation. Analyzes quality control materials for each procedure and records values per section policy. Performs comparison studies of precision, accuracy, linearity on new or existing procedures and reports results by established deadlines. Assures proper packaging and disposal of waste chemicals. Laboratory Information System Operation Performs order or result entry (manual or computerized) and reviews information for accuracy before verification. Prepares legible written reports. Retrieves results to resolve questions for nurses, physicians, or other hospital personnel. Supply Management Checks instruments and benches for reagent and supply levels and replenishes as necessary. Ensures adequate inventory levels for incoming shifts. Specimen Processing / Shipping Performs proper processing and preservation of tissue specimens. Complies with specimen storage and preservation procedures. Licenses and Certifications Licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist – Technician (CLS – Technician) through the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners. Skills and Abilities Knowledge of medical laboratory testing techniques. Knowledge of standard phlebotomy and skin puncture techniques and appropriate blood processing and handling procedures. Ability to perform routine medical laboratory tests, procedures, and analysis. Accurately complete and maintain patient documents and records; ability to understand and follow specific clinical protocol and to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
