EC GENERAL CURRICULUM TEACHER - J.H. KNOX INTERMEDIATE Location: J.H. Knox Intermediate, Salisbury, North Carolina Job Description Under general supervision, provides special education services to students identified as disabled in accordance with state and federal regulations who are following general curriculum. Work involves developing and implementing the Individual Education Program in classroom settings compatible with the student’s age and developmental level. The EC teacher is responsible for developing lesson plans, adapting materials, and designing activities to assist EC students develop appropriate academic, behavioral, and social skills and to meet IEP goals. The teacher monitors student progress and maintains EC records in full compliance with state and federal guidelines. Qualifications Degree in special education and certification in general curriculum by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Physical Requirements: Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as laptops, iPads, calculators, pencils, scissors, and equipment for children with special needs; able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects; and meet Light Work physical standards. Data Conception: Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics of data, people, or things. Interpersonal Communication: Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information; includes receiving instructions, assignments, and/or directions from superiors. Language Ability: Ability to read varied correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms, lists, etc.; prepare correspondence, simple reports, forms, instructional materials using prescribed formats. Intelligence: Ability to apply logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; interpret technical instructions; handle multiple abstract and concrete variables. Verbal Aptitude: Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively in technical or professional languages, including medical, legal, and counseling terminology. Numerical Aptitude: Ability to use mathematical formulas, perform basic arithmetic, work with decimals and percentages, and apply descriptive and inferential statistics. Form/Spatial Aptitude: Ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape. Motor Coordination: Ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately while using office equipment. Manual Dexterity: Ability to handle a variety of items such as office equipment and hand tools with minimal eye/hand/foot coordination. Color Discrimination: Ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color. Interpersonal Temperament: Ability to adapt to working under stress and confront emergency situations while dealing with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Physical Communication: Ability to talk, hear, and communicate via telephone. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students, especially during inclusive activities. Motivate students effectively. Maintain a clean and orderly environment. Perform general clerical duties. Maintain order and discipline in the classroom. Operate common office machines. Maintain basic files and records. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Establish and maintain effective working relationships as needed for job assignments. Key Duties and Responsibilities Develops and implements an instructional plan compatible with school and system-wide curricular goals and the students’ Individual Education Program. Responsible for developing, implementing, and updating Individual Education Programs (IEP) using diagnostic information from tests and assessment procedures. Provides direct special education instruction to identified students. Employs a variety of teaching methods tailored to student needs; adapts or develops materials as necessary. Monitors student behavior, maintains classroom discipline, deescalates inappropriate behaviors, teaches behavioral strategies, restrains students when necessary, and records and reports restraints. Assists students with personal and self‑help needs such as eating, toileting, and other essential tasks. Communicates with parents regarding educational progress through periodic written progress reports. Acts as a case coordinator; consults with community caregivers, school support professionals, and parents to better understand and meet student needs. Maintains student records in accordance with North Carolina’s Procedures Governing Programs and Services for Children with Disabilities and complies with state and federal statutes. Treats all students fairly and equitably; interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and community members.
