Annual Salary Ranges:

• Transportation Maintenance Technician I (A16) - $40,918 - $61,130
• Transportation Maintenance Technician II (A17) - $42,976 - $64,469
• Transportation Maintenance Technician III (A18) - $45,521 - $71,055
• Transportation Maintenance Technician IV (A19) - $48,244 - $76,028

This position is for a Transportation Maintenance Technician I, II, III or IV. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Position Description

Performs advanced transportation operations or maintenance support work such as complex maintenance contract inspection and material and process inspection; light and heavy equipment operation; roadway maintenance; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

• Transportation Maintenance Technician I Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities. Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
• Transportation Maintenance Technician II In addition to the duties listed above: Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products.
• Transportation Maintenance Technician III In addition to the duties listed above Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications. Trains other employees.
• Transportation Maintenance Technician IV In addition to the duties listed above: Inspects complex maintenance and construction-related work to include hot mix overlay to ensure compliance with safety, laws and regulations, contract specifications and departmental procedures. Reviews and assists in the development of traffic control plans, coordinates with law enforcement agencies, monitors lane closures at construction sites, documents changes in the traffic control setup and coordinates with the Public Information Officer.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: None required Experience: Transportation Maintenance Technician I: No experience required Transportation Maintenance Technician II: 1 year transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent) Transportation Maintenance Technician III: 2 years transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent) Transportation Maintenance Technician IV: 3 years transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)

Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver's license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle. TMT I/II: Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A" License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment. TMT III/IV: Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A" License, at time of application.
