The Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida is looking to hire a full-time Peer Counselor to work in our Family Treatment Center. The Peer Counselor plays an important role in supporting individuals receiving treatment for substance use disorders and co-occurring behavioral health conditions by helping create a safe, structured, respectful, and recovery-focused environment.

 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Provide direct supervision to clients throughout their treatment experience.
• Serve as a positive role model while promoting recovery, personal responsibility, healthy coping skills, and positive decision-making.
• Monitor and engage with clients throughout the day to support their safety, well-being, and successful participation in the treatment program.
• Encourage and support client participation in therapeutic groups, recovery activities, scheduled programming, and daily routines.
• Reinforce program expectations, appropriate behaviors, established boundaries, and Family Treatment Center guidelines.
• Promote healthy communication, respectful interactions, and positive peer relationships among clients.
• Observe client behavior, presentation, and overall functioning and promptly report significant changes or concerns to the appropriate counselor or clinical staff.
• Recognize and report concerns related to substance use, potential withdrawal symptoms, mental health symptoms, behavioral changes, or client safety to the appropriate counselor or clinical staff for further assessment and follow-up.
• Follow established reporting procedures and communicate client concerns through the appropriate counseling or supervisory channels.
• Collaborate with counselors, therapists, and other appropriate members of the interdisciplinary treatment team to support continuity of care and client recovery.
• Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and interact with clients in a respectful, supportive, and recovery-oriented manner.
• Protect client privacy and confidentiality in accordance with applicable confidentiality requirements and facility policies and procedures.
• Assist in maintaining a safe, structured, respectful, and supportive treatment environment.
• Follow all Family Treatment Center policies, procedures, safety requirements, and established protocols.
• Recognize the limitations of the Peer Counselor role and seek assistance from appropriate counseling, clinical, or supervisory staff when situations fall outside the scope of the position.
• Refrain from independently providing therapy, diagnosing mental health or substance use disorders, developing clinical treatment plans, or making clinical treatment decisions.
• Other duties as assigned.

 

Education/ Experience: 

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Previous experience in behavioral health, substance use treatment, mental health services, residential treatment, recovery services, or a related field preferred.
• Peer support, recovery support, behavioral health, CPR/First Aid, crisis intervention, or related training or certification is a plus.
• Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with clients, counselors, therapists, supervisors, and other appropriate members of the treatment team.
• Demonstrated sound judgment and ability to recognize when client concerns should be reported or escalated to counseling, clinical, or supervisory staff.
• Ability to maintain professional boundaries and protect client confidentiality.
• Demonstrated reliability, accountability, and professionalism.
• Ability to follow established policies, procedures, instructions, and program expectations.
• Ability to remain calm, professional, and effective during challenging, stressful, or crisis situations.
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a treatment team.
• Demonstrated compassion, patience, professionalism, and respect when working with individuals receiving behavioral health or substance use treatment services.
• Ability to contribute to a culturally respectful, client-centered, and recovery-oriented treatment environment.

 

Shift is for Nights, schedule would be 1:30pm-9:30pm, days of week would require flexibility to include weekends and holidays.
