The Department of Residential Facilities is responsible for the maintenance and housekeeping services for the College Park Campus' 70+ residence halls, Greek chapter houses, and recreational facilities encompassing over 2.7 million square feet. The department employs over 300 exempt, non-exempt and student staff.
General Responsibilities:
The Multi Trades Chief III position will serve as a working foreperson for the Facilities Maintenance operations in one of the residential areas. Community maintenance staff are responsible for corrective repairs, preventative maintenance work, and small-scale projects in the residence halls. Community Maintenance is part of a larger Facilities Maintenance unit and is responsible for approximately 30,000 service requests annually. As a working foreperson, the incumbent may be tasked with performing identical tasks assigned to front-line Community Maintenance staff.
Physical Demands:
The incumbent will be required to work from ladders or scaffolding; to work in, on, around, over, and under fixed equipment and machinery; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 70 lbs. Position requires the following physical activities: kneeling, stooping, climbing, walking, lifting, and performing tasks at various heights. Will work in hazardous or irritating environments, un-air conditioned spaces and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment. This position may require the incumbent to exercise sustained physical activity in demonstrating or assisting in completing a relatively wide range of maintenance tasks. The incumbent will be required to drive a state vehicle to inspect work, and may be required to shovel snow and handle snow-moving equipment (snowblowers, plows) as part of essential responsibilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of general building renovation trades is preferred. Carpentry tasks include repairing and refinishing wood furniture and benches, with a preference for drywall and painting. Framing with metal materials and drywall, along with the installation and repair of doors, drop ceilings, and ceramic tile, is also preferred. A strong background in plumbing is preferred, along with the ability to assist with all aspects of small-scale renovations. Experience in a residential, hospital, hotel, University, or other related environment designed.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High school/GED
Experience: Six years progressively responsible experience in the trade(s) where assigned to include at least two years in a lead or supervisory capacity.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Comprehensive knowledge of and skill in the methods and techniques of the trade(s) where assigned; of the OSHA regulations related to the trade(s) area. Thorough knowledge of and skill in the practical application of electronics, hydraulics, and mechanics as used in maintenance work; of basic mathematics including area, volume, weights and the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions; of the care and storage of equipment and supplies used in the area where assigned. General knowledge of the principles of supervision in the maintenance trades. Skill in the use and maintenance of the tools and equipment of the trade(s) where assigned. Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, schematics, drawings, and specifications; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to lead and train skilled and unskilled employees in assigned trade(s) work; to prepare summaries and reports; to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to work from ladders and scaffolding; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 70 lbs.; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on machinery and equipment; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
Conditions of Employment:
Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job. A non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver's license valid in the State of Maryland may be required. Employees in this job class may be required to be trained to work with asbestos. Employees in this job class assigned to work with equipment containing CFC refrigerants must achieve and maintain valid certification in accordance with federal law.
Salary Range: $53,081.00 - $63,697.00
