Traffic Systems Technician I or II – (2601379) Position Information TxDOT is seeking a Traffic Systems Technician I or II based in Houston, Texas, at the Traffic Systems Maintenance Office located at 6810 Old Katy Rd. This is an entry level position supporting the maintenance of traffic signals, roadway illumination, and related traffic systems across the district. In this role, you will be part of a hands‑on team responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting traffic signal equipment, lighting systems, and communication devices that keep our roadways operating safely and efficiently. Position Description Traffic Systems Technician I Entry‑level work activities related to the installation, repair, troubleshooting, and maintenance of traffic systems, communication, illumination and/or data collection devices/systems. Work may be performed in heavy traffic and may require extensive statewide travel. Employees follow specific instructions and are subject to frequent review by the immediate supervisor. Traffic Systems Technician II Routine work activities related to the installation, repair, troubleshooting, maintenance and programming of traffic systems, communication, illumination and/or data collection devices/systems. Employees follow standard practices with minimal supervision. Essential Duties Traffic Systems Technician I Assists in inspecting construction methods, workmanship and maintenance procedures to ensure contractors build, install, and maintain traffic control equipment in accordance with plans and specifications. Assists in responding to complaints and identifying problems regarding traffic signal timing and traffic congestion, and assists in developing recommendations for long‑term solutions. Assists in working with other governmental and private entities concerning utilities and rights‑of‑way. Learns to identify, troubleshoot, problem‑solve, and identify possible new site characteristics. Responds to emergency situations to assist with repair and maintenance of traffic signals, systems, lighting, or traffic data collection equipment. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Traffic Systems Technician II Attends meetings with Area Engineers and contractors to resolve problems and implement solutions. Identifies, troubleshoots and problem‑solves possible new site characteristics. Inspects construction methods, workmanship and maintenance procedures to ensure traffic control equipment is built, installed, maintained and repaired in accordance with plans, specifications and contract requirements. Follows applicable safety procedures when working in areas with high‑voltage lines, gas lines, water and sewage lines, and heavy traffic. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Traffic Systems Technician I Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent in general high school studies. Experience: No experience required. Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or obtain a CDL "A" License within 180 calendar days of employment. Current Military or Veterans: U.S. Military CDL Equivalent. Must obtain Texas Class "A" CDL within 180 days of employment. Traffic Systems Technician II Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent in general high school studies. Experience: 1 year of construction, electronic troubleshooting, electrical construction/installation, electromechanical, traffic management, transportation engineering, design, traffic systems maintenance (full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent). Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or obtain a CDL "A" License within 180 calendar days of employment. Current Military or Veterans: U.S. Military CDL Equivalent. Must obtain Texas Class "A" CDL within 180 days of employment. Competencies Traffic Systems Technician I Some knowledge of electrical construction procedures and applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes. Proficient skill in preparing and maintaining confidential records, files, and reports; safely using, operating, and maintaining applicable equipment. Some skill in collecting, sorting, and compiling data; communicating technical information effectively; using computers, programs, applications, and systems. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions; work with electricity up to 600 volts. Traffic Systems Technician II Considerable knowledge of industry guidelines, specifications, and codes in the production and use of technical plans; traffic engineering terminology and fundamentals; electrical construction procedures; and applicable safety standards. Proficient skill in reading and interpreting applicable plans, schematics, blueprints, and maps; communicating technical information effectively; interpreting applicable information; maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others. Some skill in writing, reviewing, and revising documents to include engineering notes, specifications, standards, and procedures. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes. Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs. Climbing: ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc. Stooping: bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist. Kneeling: bending legs at knee to come to rest on knee(s). Standing: prolonged periods of time. Walking: moving on foot to accomplish tasks over long distances or between sites. Conditions of Employment Job is physically demanding and requires a pre‑employment physical. Must pass a drug test prior to employment. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing. The Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) – does not authorize medical marijuana under state law as a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result. Must maintain the security or integrity of the agency’s critical infrastructure and will be subject to regular criminal history and/or foreign adversary assessments. Must be able to report for duty within 120 minutes of notification on a 24‑hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
