International Student Advisor

This position reports to the Associate Director of the Office of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) within International Education and Global Affairs (IEGA). The International Student and Scholar Advisor plays a key role in ensuring the university's compliance with federal regulations governing international students, exchange visitors, and visiting scholars. The position requires the application of specialized knowledge of U.S. immigration regulations, as well as university academic policies and procedures. Working in a dynamic and collaborative environment, the advisor serves as an integral member of multiple teams, including immigration and insurance advising, front desk operations, SEVIS management, information technology, ISSS, and IEGA. The advisor will help plan, coordinate, and implement programs and services that support the university community, while partnering with ISSS colleagues and campus stakeholders to advance the mission and strategic goals of the office. The advisor is responsible for maintaining Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) compliance and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of related university systems and records. The successful candidate will serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), as authorized by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of State, respectively. In addition, the advisor acts as a liaison between ISSS and university administrative offices, as well as community partners, to support the needs of international students, scholars, and the broader campus community. Duties: Advise international students and scholars through in-person, virtual, telephone, and email consultations on immigration-related matters, university policies, and available resources. Serve as a proactive and collaborative team member, communicating and interpreting departmental immigration policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. Act as a liaison with state and federal agencies, including but not limited to the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), Social Security Administration (SSA), and Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Exercise sound professional judgment in making informed and independent determinations regarding eligibility for immigration benefits while balancing regulatory compliance, institutional policy, and customer service considerations. Support and staff programs, events, and initiatives sponsored by ISSS and partner offices across the university. Develop and deliver presentations at orientations, workshops, and informational sessions for students, scholars, campus partners, and professional audiences, both on campus and at conferences, as assigned. Serve on departmental, divisional, and university committees as appropriate and as determined by departmental leadership. Represent ISSS and Binghamton University at professional meetings, conferences, and other engagements within SUNY and in external professional organizations. Collaborate with campus partners to promote international student and scholar success and advance the mission of ISSS and the university.
