Job Summary
The Pipe Layer performs all labor tasks as assigned by supervisor related to installing utilities and pipelines.
Essential Functions
- Acts as lead laborer to carry out directions as assigned by Foreman.
- Responsible for the proper installation of pipelines and other utilities.
- Be aware of and responsive to safety issues related to excavation and trenching.
- Monitors excavations and shoring systems for safety and communicates to Foreman.
- Ensures pipe and fittings are installed in the proper manner as specified.
- Assists in developing and testing plans for each project, assists in carrying them out.
- Performs related work as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities
This position has no supervisory responsibilities, but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.
Work Environment
- Frequently exposed to fumes, or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration.
- Exposure to extreme weather conditions.
- Loud noise levels on the job sites.
- Active jobsite with moving vehicles and heavy machinery.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, sitting and climbing for extended periods of time.
- Ability to climb a ladder.
- Ability to work in confined spaces.
- Ability to wear PPE (Personal protective equipment).
- Ability to work with multiple hand-arm vibration tools.
- Must frequently lift or move items 50 pounds or more
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
- Ability to work and walk on uneven terrain.
Position Type and Hours
This is a full time position. 40 hours per week and may require longer hours including evenings, weekends and overtime.
Travel
Occasional travel is required.
Required Education and Experience
- High School diploma or GED.
- One year experience in pipe laying.
- Basic understanding of OSHA regulations related to trenching, shoring and confined spaces.
- Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Degree or certificate in related field.
- Three years’ experience in pipe, utility or grading.
