Vancouver Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Temporary Fitness Instructor

Salary $23.04 - $37.75 per hour Job Summary Vancouver Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services seeks enthusiastic candidates skilled in working with all ages and abilities in a fitness or water exercise environment. As a group instructor, you will represent the City by demonstrating and verbally instructing effective aerobic, strengthening, flexibility, and balance exercise workout techniques. Responsibilities Set up, monitor, and maintain class equipment. Ensure equipment is returned in serviceable condition. Communicate and work well with all program participants, other staff, and any individuals contacted during work. Maintain safety standards and facility policies at all times. Conduct fitness classes, modifying intensity levels and motivating participants with a friendly manner. Use basic choreography and musicality in class delivery. Lift and move objects weighing up to 25 pounds on a frequent basis. For water exercise: demonstrate effective water fitness strategies from the pool deck, incorporating music, tempo, cueing techniques and rhythm; project voice over pool noise. Use a cordless mic (provided in the workplace). Maintain a calm and professional demeanor in all situations, including emergencies. Licenses and Certifications Valid CPR, First Aid, and AED cards (obtain within one month of hire). National group or water exercise certification (ACE, AEA, AFAA, NETA, or other specialty) (obtain within six months of hire). Qualifications At least 18 years of age. Experience or training in fitness/background for exercise or group exercise studio. Ability to modify intensity levels and motivate classes in a fun and friendly manner. Knowledge of exercise training principles, basic choreography, and musicality. Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends. Respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations. Maintain professional appearance, adhere to dress code, and deliver excellent customer service. Establish and maintain effective relationships with the public and City employees. Read, write, and follow instructions. Monitor compliance with policies and procedures. Maintain certifications through continuing education. Successful completion of pre-employment reference and background checks. Previous experience working with people with special needs is desirable.
