6869 W. 153rd Street, Johnson, Overland Park, KS 66223, US Equipment Operator The City of Overland Park is seeking a full‑time Equipment Operator for the Stormwater Maintenance/Public Works Department. The role involves operating a variety of mobile equipment, performing routine inspections and basic maintenance, and providing leadership and training to crew members. Job Summary Operates tracked and rubber‑tired backhoes, wheeled and skid‑steer bucket loaders, asphalt compactors, sewer jetting machines, and street sweepers. Inspects equipment, performs minor mechanical maintenance, and uses the equipment to clean, maintain, repair public streets, sidewalks, storm drains, and related infrastructure. Responds to after‑hour or emergency work and may serve as a crew lead. Responsibilities Operate skid‑steer loaders with attachments such as asphalt planers, point breakers, sweeper brush buckets, and post‑hole augers. Operate tracked or wheeled bucket loaders for stockpiling and transporting materials like soil, rock salt, and gravel. Operate tracked or rubber‑tired backhoes for excavation, material placement, debris removal, and asphalting streets. Transport equipment with fifth‑wheel trailers, straight trucks, and low‑boy trailers; abide by transport regulations. Drive dump trucks and operating attachments such as salt spreaders and snow plows. Participate in the snow and ice control program, maintaining snow plow equipment and performing mechanical upkeep. Perform walk‑around inspections, replenish fluids, complete logbooks, and report equipment malfunctions. Lead crew when assigned, ensuring timely delivery of equipment and materials, monitoring safety, and supervising traffic controls. Train crew members on equipment operation and maintenance. Perform light mechanical shop work, including cutting torches, welding, and hand tools. Assist in general maintenance and repair of city infrastructure, including shoveling, asphalt raking, and jack‑hammering. Enter data into a computerized work management system. Read and interpret operating and maintenance manuals, construction blueprints, work schedules, and utility location information. Sector‑Specific Duties Streets Maintain, repair, and upgrade public streets, curbs, bridges, sidewalks, retaining walls, and parking lots. Operate oil distributor trucks for road oils and monitor distribution equipment. Operate pneumatic wheel compaction rollers and asphalt paving machines for asphalt placement. Operate toothed drum milling machines for asphalt or concrete removal. Stormwater Maintain storm drain piping, inlet structures, drainage channels, and sweep city streets. Operate water jet and vacuum trucks for storm drain cleaning. Operate street sweepers, monitor debris collection, and manage debris transport. Requirements Education & Licenses High school diploma or equivalent. Valid Class A commercial driver’s license with air‑brake and tanker endorsements. ATSSA or IMSA Construction Traffic Flagger and Work Zone Safety Certification. Insurable driving record. Experience Five (5) years of general construction experience, including operation of mobile construction equipment and heavy‑duty vehicles. Skills Strong oral and written communication. Good listening and driving skills. Leadership and interpersonal skills for training and leading crew. Mechanical maintenance skills and basic computer proficiency. Welding skills. Mental Requirements Ability to analyze work conditions, recognize safety hazards, and respond appropriately. Quick decision–making, independent work, teamwork, and logical evaluation of situations. Alertness for long periods, ability to work under distracting conditions, and mechanical aptitude. Alpha/numeric recognition and ability to read/understand drawings and written documents. Diplomacy, tactful judgment, and logical reasoning. Physical Requirements Hand, eye, and body coordination for operating heavy machinery and equipment. Ability to withstand extreme weather, vibrations, standing, sitting, walking for extended periods. Traverse rough terrain on foot, climb, and work at extended heights. Work with noise exposure, distinguish colors, and drive city vehicles. Visual stamina and acuity to review alpha/numeric data. Benefits & Conditions Full‑time position.
