Orientation & Mobility Specialist - San Benito, TX

Make a meaningful impact supporting students' independence by serving as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist in a school-based setting near San Benito, TX. This contract position offers the opportunity to provide essential services, helping students who are visually impaired develop the skills they need to confidently navigate both their schools and communities.


Qualifications & Experience:

• Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) credentials, or eligibility to obtain.
• Prior experience working with children or youth with visual impairments in educational settings is preferred.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills for working with educators, families, and other school professionals.
• Proficiency in assessing student needs and developing individualized mobility plans.
• Familiarity with assistive technology and adaptive equipment for students with visual impairments.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assess student orientation and mobility needs and create tailored instructional goals and lesson plans.
• Deliver direct orientation and mobility instruction individually or in small groups, on and off campus.
• Teach safe and effective travel techniques, including cane usage, street crossings, public transportation navigation, and indoor/outdoor environmental awareness.
• Collaborate with teachers, special education staff, and families to support student progress and advocate for accessibility.
• Maintain thorough documentation on student goals, ongoing progress, and program adjustments.
• Contribute expertise to multidisciplinary team meetings and provide recommendations for creating safe, accessible learning environments.
