Food Services Assistant - Multiple Openings

Food Services Assistant (FSA) At Houston Methodist, the Food Services Assistant (FSA) position is responsible for performing a variety of duties in the kitchen, patient tray line, and/or retail areas such as assisting in tray assembly for patients, simple food preparation, serving customers, and setting up to include replenishing stations. This position transports food carts to and from kitchen areas to patient care units and/or conference rooms in a timely manner and performs dishwashing duties as assigned. The FSA communicates with peers and management regarding hazards, follows proper procedures for cleaning equipment and sanitation of work areas, and complies with local Food Ordinances.

FLSA STATUS

Non‑exempt Qualifications Education: High School diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED, homeschool equivalency, partial or full post‑secondary education) preferred. Experience: Experience in a food service environment or large service establishment preferred. Licenses and Certifications: Food Handlers Permit – accredited food handler training course approved by TXDSHS or ANSI. Skills and Abilities Demonstrates necessary skills and competencies to safely perform the job, determined through ongoing assessments. Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English necessary for essential functions involving patient or employee safety. Effectively communicates with patients, physicians, family members, and co‑workers with a customer‑service focus. Working knowledge of Serve Safe guidelines and health department standards. Knowledge of food service equipment and sanitation principles. Active listening skills. Knowledge of kitchen equipment. Essential Functions People Essential Functions Interacts positively and professionally with patients, visitors, and staff; communicates clearly to promote teamwork and resolve problems. Follows through on problem resolution and provides leadership reports when issues arise. Contributes to improvement of department engagement scores through peer accountability. Service Essential Functions Prepares and serves simple food items as directed by production sheets or menus. Delivers trays with accuracy and efficiency to designated locations within established time frames. Assists with tray assembly on the tray line as needed; works in the dish room as assigned. Transports pantry supplies, garbage, cardboard, and supplies to designated areas and maintains clean storage areas. Retrieves soiled trays and returns carts promptly to appropriate locations. Performs patient tray setup and ensures supplies are stocked for each meal period. Quality/Safety Essential Functions Follows proper procedure in loading and transporting food delivery carts to prevent spillage and delay deliveries. Accurately maintains food cart delivery log. Ensures food is presented attractively, kept at proper temperature, and adheres to local Food Ordinances (labelling, dating, rotating, discarding expired items). Follows the menu closely; reviews menus in advance to ensure supplies are available; uses downtime to prepare setups for scheduled times. Finance Essential Functions Minimizes food waste through portion control and proper storage to reduce departmental cost and expenses. Utilizes resources cost‑effectively and values creation; self‑motivated to manage time and prioritize tasks.
