Utilities Meter Technician Department of Public Works Water and Sewer Division Minimum: $31.54/hour Maximum: $33.47/hour Posting Date: July 22, 2026 Closing Date: August 5, 2026, at 11:59 pm Additional hourly incentives for Limited Water Treatment, Water Distribution and Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control Certifications The Water & Sewer Division is dedicated to serving residents of the City of Troy by ensuring that the quality of the drinking water is above all standards and that water needed to fight fires is never compromised. They are also dedicated to ensuring the safe and efficient discharge of wastewater to the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) waste treatment facility.

DUTIES

Perform work with water meters: reading, repairing and installing. Provide customer service, describe policies, and relay technical information to residents. Procurement and inventory control of parts, equipment, and supplies. Perform general labor work and other similar work assignments. Perform Residential Cross Connection Surveys

REQUIREMENTS

High school graduate (or GED equivalent). Must have good communication and customer service skills. Must have at the time of application, and maintain, a valid Michigan driver license with a good driving record (based on City of Troy standards). Will be required to obtain, and maintain, a commercial driver license (CDL), including air brakes and (N) endorsement, and Medical Card as required by the State of Michigan by the end of review period per contract. Applicant will be required to obtain their S-4 Water Certification within two (2) years of their start date. (1) year minimum experience and knowledge of a Municipal water and sewer system, underground utilities, or related experience and knowledge. The City of Troy follows all federal guidelines related to the Clearinghouse.

PREFERENCES

Water meter installation, testing, and troubleshooting experience. (1) year of customer service or customer focused experience. Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy Water System Operator certification of S-4 or higher.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS

Application review and interview.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

Applicants must receive at least a score of 70 on the interview to be placed on the eligible list. Vacancy will be filled pursuant to Article 22 Posting of Vacancy in the current AFSCME collective bargaining agreement.

HOURS

Monday – Friday; 6:30 am – 3:00 pm. Overtime is required at times; employees should work at least 50% of offered overtime.
