Deputy Sheriff - School Protection Officer (SPO)

Deputy Sheriff – School Protection Officer (SPO) Part‑time position. Must be available to work the full hours of the school day throughout the school calendar year. $26.31 per hour. Additional credit up to 10 years or 50% of hours, whichever is greater. Full salary range $26.31 – $45.49 per hour. Responsibilities Patrol the assigned school and ensure a safe environment for students, staff, and visitors. Maintain situational awareness of visitors and activities at the school. Intervene and respond to any threats toward teachers, students, or visitors. Conduct daily inspections of the school to ensure all physical security measures are in place and functioning. Respond to radio dispatches and answer calls and complaints for the assigned school. Make arrests, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints. Subdue resisting suspects using approved self‑defense methods. Participate in school lockdowns and other emergency preparedness drills. Perform crime‑prevention duties and related tasks as required. Complete daily activity reports. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of police methods, procedures, and team practices; general knowledge of county geography; knowledge of sheriff’s office rules; ability to understand oral and written instructions and prepare comprehensive reports; ability to interact courteously, firmly, and tactfully with the public; ability to analyze situations and respond quickly and appropriately; physical agility and endurance; proficiency with firearms and vehicle operation; knowledge of methods for securing and protecting people from physical threats. Education & Experience Current Virginia DCJS Law Enforcement certification (Road/Patrol) and prior road‑patrol experience in a sworn position. High school diploma or equivalency (GED) required. Valid V.A. driver’s license. Must meet and maintain all sheriff’s office and state criminal justice system training requirements. U.S. citizen. At least 21 years of age at time of hire. Physical agility test, interview, polygraph, background investigation, physical, psychological, and drug/alcohol testing required. Special Requirements Stafford County deputies must reside in Virginia and hold a valid V.A. driver’s license. The position involves exertion of up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and lifting or dragging 165 pounds occasionally; requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting. Exposure to extreme temperatures, noise, vibration, hazardous conditions; may require protective equipment and exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
