Job Description

The Distribution Field Technician supports the safe and reliable operation of overhead and underground electrical distribution systems. This role is based out of the Dayton-area office and focuses on field inspections, data collection, and minor work order preparation for low voltage distribution equipment. The technician measures and maps distribution systems, documents electrical assets, and performs a variety of field technical services that help maintain and improve electrical infrastructure. This position is well suited for individuals with in physically demanding work who are looking for a role with better hours, less heavy labor, and substantial time spent outdoors conducting visual inspections and collecting data.

Responsibilities

• Conduct visual inspections of overhead and underground electrical distribution equipment to assess condition and identify issues.
• Compile accurate field data, prepare minor work orders, and maintain detailed reports on distribution equipment and field activities.
• Measure and map Low Voltage Distribution (LVD) systems to support system documentation and planning.
• Identify and record electrical equipment on poles, including all relevant attributes required for asset management.
• Perform system inventories, audits, joint use management activities, permitting support, pad-mount equipment inspections, ground-line pole inspections, metering and apparatus services, and lighting audits.
• Use laptops, tablets, GPS units, and other electronic devices to collect, record, and upload field data in a timely and accurate manner.
• Develop and maintain a working knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), electric utility construction standards, and communication facilities associated with distribution systems.
• Operate field measurement tools such as height sticks and range finders to obtain precise clearances and dimensions.
• Conduct pole inspections and perform basic maintenance-related tasks on pad-mount equipment as directed.
• Support distribution design activities, including overhead line assessments, pole analysis, easement verification, and power distribution asset documentation.
• Achieve weekly billable goals as defined by project guidelines and maintain productivity and quality standards.
• Collaborate with field team members and project leaders to plan daily work, resolve issues in the field, and ensure safe and efficient completion of assignments.
• Follow all safety procedures and guidelines while working around electrical distribution systems and in various outdoor environments.

Essential Skills

• Ability to collect, organize, and analyze field data accurately for electrical distribution systems.
• Basic computer proficiency, including the use of software such as Excel for data entry, tracking, and reporting.
• Capability to use laptops, tablets, GPS devices, and other electronic tools for field data collection.
• Familiarity with or willingness to develop working knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
• Ability to operate field equipment such as height sticks and range finders to take accurate measurements.
• Comfort working outdoors for extended periods and performing visual inspections of poles, pad-mount equipment, and other distribution assets.
• Strong attention to detail when measuring, mapping, and documenting Low Voltage Distribution (LVD) systems and equipment.
• Effective communication skills to document findings clearly and interact with team members and project stakeholders.
• High School Diploma preferred or equivalent education.
• Eligibility to meet company vehicle driving requirements, with a preference for candidates aged 21 or older; candidates aged 20 may be acceptable based on requirements.
• Ability to meet weekly productivity and billable targets while maintaining quality and safety standards.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in physically demanding roles such as manual labor, construction, utility locating, landscaping, manufacturing, or warehouse/cold storage environments.
• in utility locating or working around utility infrastructure.
• Exposure to distribution design, overhead lines, pole analysis, and power distribution systems.
• Familiarity with easements and joint use management concepts in a utility context.
• Experience using height sticks and similar measurement tools in the field.
• Associate Technology Degrees are welcome when combined with relevant hands-on work experience and a strong physical work profile.
• Ability to adapt from traditional clock-in/clock-out environments to a field-based role focused on visual inspections and data collection.
• Strong work ethic and comfort with long workdays when needed, including 10-hour shifts.
• Willingness to learn and grow through training, new skills, and certifications provided by the employer.

Work Environment

The Distribution Field Technician reports to the Dayton-area office on a daily basis before departing for field assignments. After checking in at the office, the technician is assigned to travel with another team member who drives to the designated work locations for the day. Most work sites are within approximately one hour of the office, providing a regional field territory. The role involves significant time outdoors performing visual inspections and data collection on electrical distribution equipment, including overhead lines, poles, and pad-mount equipment. Technicians use laptops, tablets, GPS devices, height sticks, and range finders as part of their daily toolkit. The standard schedule consists of four 10-hour workdays, with openness to five 10-hour days depending on project needs. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Dayton, OH.

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
