Custodian

Job Purpose
The Custodian I maintains a high standard of cleanliness throughout Airport Board buildings and facilities. This role performs a full range of custodial duties and may assist passengers and the public with basic questions or directions.


Shift: Sunday-Wednesday 4:30pm - 3:00 am OR Wednesday-Saturday 4:30pm - 3:00am.


Duties & Responsibilities
General Cleaning & Sanitation
• Stock and maintain cleaning cart.
• Clean and sanitize restrooms, including toilets, urinals, fixtures, floors, mirrors, and glass.
• Dust and clean surfaces such as door frames, ceilings, vents, ledges, displays, and light fixtures.
• Stock restrooms with supplies (toilet paper, paper towels, soap) and restock as needed.
• Collect and remove trash and recyclables from the terminal, parking structures, and grounds; clean and sanitize all trash containers.
• Clean elevators in the terminal and parking garage, including floors, walls, and chrome surfaces.
• Clean interior and exterior windows at the front of the terminal and interior windows at the rear.


Floor Care
• Clean and maintain all flooring types (ceramic, vinyl, tile, carpet, terrazzo, wood).
• Use manual and automated equipment for vacuuming, dust mopping, spot cleaning, shampooing, stone polishing, stripping, and waxing.
• Learn to operate equipment such as buffers, sweepers, strippers, and carpet shampooers.


Additional Cleaning Tasks
• Wash approved materials using provided washer and dryer.
• Check and empty liquid disposal bins; clean and sanitize as needed.
• Perform detailed exterior cleaning (cobwebs, cigarette butts, trash).
• Clean and sanitize pet relief areas.
• Refill and maintain hand sanitizer stations.
• Disinfect house phones.
• Keep supply rooms clean and organized; break down boxes for recycling.


Customer Service & Communication
• Assist passengers with simple inquiries and directions.
• Provide professional, courteous interactions with travelers, tenants, airline personnel, and airport employees.
• Communicate work activities effectively with team members and supervisors.
• Maintain a positive, cooperative working relationship with colleagues.


Administrative & Compliance
• Follow OSHA Hazard Communication standards, including proper use of Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
• Complete and submit daily checklists, sign-in sheets, and work acknowledgements via tablet.
• Submit timecards, request time off, and update personal information using HR software.
• Read and respond to email using company-provided email.
• Perform duties as directed by the Custodial Supervisor or Crew Leaders.
• Be available for call-back during emergencies, adverse weather, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Perform other duties as assigned.


Weather & Seasonal Duties
• Remove snow and ice from sidewalks; apply salt using proper tools and training.
• Work indoors and outdoors during inclement weather, including low temperatures.


Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to perform manual labor for extended shifts.
• Previous janitorial experience preferred.
• Ability to interact professionally with customers and the public.
• Ability to read and interpret chemical labels, SDS sheets, instructions, and warning signs.
• Willingness to learn commercial cleaning techniques and operate custodial equipment.
• Ability to use or learn to use computers or phone apps for timekeeping, benefits, and communication.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships and demonstrate a positive, professional attitude.
• Ability to handle reasonable workplace stress.


Working Conditions
• Full-time, on-site position requiring regular and punctual attendance.
• Shifts may be 8 or 10 hours, including weekends, holidays, mornings, and evenings.
• Work performed indoors, outdoors, and throughout airport facilities.
• Exposure to heights, electrical hazards, extreme temperatures, and weather conditions.
• Occasional exposure to bloodborne pathogens and bodily fluids.
• May require extended or additional shifts during special projects, emergencies, or weather events.
• May require work beyond 40 hours to meet deadlines.


Physical Requirements
• Classified as "medium" to "heavy work" under the ADA.
• Ability to speak clearly and hear normal conversation, alarms, radios, and warning signals.
• Sufficient vision to read labels, mix chemicals, identify cleanliness issues, and operate equipment.
• Ability to remain aware of passengers and surroundings to prevent accidents.
• Ability to enter and exit cleaning equipment safely.
• Ability to kneel, crouch, bend, stoop, squat, and reach at shoulder level.
• Ability to stand and walk for 8-10 hours.
• Ability to lift and carry 50-75 pounds continuously.


Special Requirements
• Possess or obtain a valid Kentucky driver's license or CDL.
• Pass random drug screenings.
• Pass background investigation during initial badging, including CHRC, STA, employment verification, and reference checks.
• Maintain ongoing CHRC and STA clearance.
• Maintain airport security badge access to required areas.
• Maintain a smartphone with voice, data, app, and text capability per cell phone policy.
• Have reliable transportation to and from work.
