Road Maintenance Worker III (Mow Crew)

Job Highlights This assignment is for the Mow Crew. The crew is responsible for clearing vegetation along County roadways to improve visibility and fire safety. Definition Under general supervision, operates and maintains complex motorized construction equipment used in construction, repair, and maintenance of roads; may act as crew leader as assigned. Responsibilities Drive construction equipment to and from job sites; load and unload equipment from trucks; operate various construction equipment including gradalls, graders, transporters, dozers, rock crushers, front-end loaders, motor rollers, and pavers. Set up, operate, maintain, and disassemble crusher equipment; monitor crusher operations; perform specialized crusher repair and maintenance work. Inspect equipment, perform preventive maintenance, and report needed repairs. Excavate, backfill, grade, and roll construction and repair sites. Load materials and supplies. Operate a variety of hand and power tools related to the work. Check job sites for hazards; read blueprints, plans, and cut sheets; determine precautions necessary for safe operations. Perform manual tasks such as constructing fences and guardrails, spreading gravel or sand, and other support functions for road crews. Direct placement of safety and traffic control devices; observe safety precautions. Make operating adjustments and minor repairs to equipment (e.g., changing buckets, tightening bolts). Secure equipment upon completion of work. Prepare basic records and reports. May direct the work of a crew on a relief basis. Respond to emergency calls in off‑hours as required. Work Schedule Summer: Monday–Thursday, 6:30 AM–5:00 PM, ½ hour lunch. Winter: Monday–Friday, 7:30 AM–4:00 PM, ½ hour lunch. Other Requirements Must possess a valid California driver’s permit and obtain a Class A license within 30 days. Must have sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects up to 100 lb. Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions and overtime or off‑hour shifts during emergencies. Must be willing to work with exposure to potentially hazardous substances and traffic. Desired Education and Experience Two years of journey‑level experience in road maintenance work at a level equivalent to the County’s Road Maintenance Worker II. Knowledge of Operation, work methods, and limitations of heavy construction equipment used in road repair, maintenance, and construction. Safe work practices and safety regulations pertaining to the operation and transportation of the equipment. Preventive maintenance and minor repair methods for the equipment. Measurement of elevations and grades. Use and maintenance of various hand and power tools related to the work. Earth‑compacting techniques. Skill in Operating, adjusting, and maintaining heavy construction equipment. Operating and maintaining hand and power tools. Cutting to grades and reading survey markers. Recognizing potentially hazardous conditions. Keeping basic written records and reports. Understanding and following oral and written instructions. Exercising independent judgment and initiative without close supervision. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships. Licenses Possession of a valid California driver’s license is required. Probationary Period Persons appointed to regular County positions serve a probationary period of six (6) months, extendable to one (12) month.
