Director of Accounting & Controls Jacksonville, FL | Full-Time | On-Site | Mid-Senior Level

Salary

$155,000~$185,000 / Annually

About the Role

Reporting directly to the CFO, the Director owns the general ledger, the monthly and annual close, internal controls, and daily accounting operations across all branches and business lines. The role combines hands-on technical accounting leadership with team management and partners with operations to protect margins and support growth.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Close

· Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close, ensuring accurate, timely GAAP financial statements

· Prepare consolidated financials across branches, entities, and business lines

· Review balance sheet reconciliations and maintain the chart of accounts

· Oversee project and contract accounting, including revenue recognition (percentage-of-completion or completed-contract)

· Manage rental revenue, fleet and fixed-asset records, and depreciation

· Partner with operations on margin variance and profitability analysis

Accounting Operations

· Supervise AP, AR/billing, and general ledger functions

· Ensure accurate customer billing (including progress billings and retainage) and drive collections

· Oversee vendor payments, subcontractor accounting, and lien waiver compliance

· Manage cash applications, bank reconciliations, and daily cash reporting to the CFO

Internal Controls & Compliance

· Design and maintain internal controls that safeguard assets and ensure reliable reporting

· Manage multi-state sales and use tax, business licensing, and regulatory filings

· Serve as primary liaison for external auditors and coordinate with external tax advisors

Planning, Analysis & Systems

· Support the CFO with budgeting, forecasting, and cash-flow management

· Build management reporting, KPIs, and dashboards for leadership and branch managers

· Own the accounting/ERP system and lead automation and system improvements

· Support banking, surety/bonding, insurance, and lender reporting

Leadership

· Manage, mentor, and develop the accounting team

· Establish accounting policies, procedures, and month-end checklists

· Act as a trusted business partner to operations and executive leadership

Qualifications

· Bachelor’s degree in accounting

· 12+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 5+ years in a supervisory or management role

· Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and internal control frameworks

· Proven experience with month-end close, financial statement preparation, and GL ownership

· Advanced Excel skills and ERP/accounting system experience

Preferred

· Active CPA

· Construction or project-based services experience, including percentage-of-completion and retainage billing

· Multi-state tax and surety bonding experience

· Construction ERP experience (Viewpoint Vista, Sage 300 CRE, Foundation, or similar)

· Multi-branch or multi-entity accounting experience
