The Patient Access Scheduler is responsible for the smooth operation and flow of calls handled within the scheduling area. This includes, but is not limited to: pre-registration, scheduling, obtaining accurate demographics, providing exam preparations, and collection of appropriate authorizations in a courteous and efficient manner. Other duties pertinent to optimal customer service, patient flow, and efficient staff utilization are also expected. The Patient Access Scheduler utilizes excellent customer service skills while working with patients, patient family members, physicians, and staff. This position may be located in clinical settings, interacting in-person with patients, physicians and clinicians and/or in centralized scheduling and registration areas including call environments.

Essential duties/responsibilities include accurately gathering necessary demographic and clinical information from patient interviews and other sources and entering into appropriate database; obtaining other necessary information and signatures required for scheduling and registration. Seeks appropriate resources to resolve issues about the type, date or location of prescribed procedures. Utilizes courteous and professional telephone techniques and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain rapport with patients, physicians, and hospital staff. Schedules patient procedures in a manner that most efficiently utilizes the patients time and clinical resources. Conducts all activities with knowledge and understanding of Sheridan Memorial Hospitals mission and values, regulatory compliance requirements, payer requirements, HIPAA privacy and security requirements, the overall revenue cycle procedures and the hospitals policies. Performs the necessary financial clearance processes, i.e. eligibility, insurance verification with professional and excellent customer service. Assists with coordination of activities related to insurance pre-certification and authorization. Provides counseling to patient or patients representative regarding pre-service requirements and instructions. Helps to maintain a professional atmosphere for patients, family members and staff.

Minimum requirements include a high school graduate or equivalent. Minimum six months customer service experience. Minimum six months experience in areas of healthcare scheduling preferred. Knowledge of CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10 codes preferred. Medical terminology course preferred. Keyboarding, filing, office procedure classes and/or experience preferred. Pre-employment drug and alcohol screening is required.
