Pharmacy TechnicianHoward University Hospital | Washington, DCRole SummaryAs a full-time Pharmacy Technician at Howard University Hospital, you will help ensure the safe, accurate, and timely preparation and distribution of medications across our inpatient pharmacy operation. Working under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist and reporting to the Director of Pharmacy Services, you will fill medication orders, support medication-history collection, maintain pharmaceutical inventory, and deliver medications to patient care areas — all in service of safe, high-quality patient care.If you are a detail-oriented pharmacy technician looking to grow your career within one of the nation's most storied academic medical centers, we invite you to apply.What You'll DoPrepare and dispense medication orders for an assigned inpatient population, filling patient medications based on physician orders and patient profiles approved by the pharmacist, in accordance with departmental proceduresFill orders for unit doses, pre-packaged pharmaceuticals, intravenous admixtures, controlled substances, floor stock, supplemental medications, emergency kits, and general stockAssist pharmacists in collecting patient medication history to identify and resolve discrepancies, improve patient safety, and reduce medication-related errorsPackage and label medications into unit doses for pharmacist inspection and approvalDeliver and pick up pharmacy documents and medications across departments and patient care locationsTrack and maintain stock levels of pharmaceutical supplies in accordance with established par levels; check and replenish floor stock and related medications to patient care areasProduce routine and requested reports from pharmacy databases, including controlled-substance use, unit inspections, medication-use studies, inventory, billing, and transfer transactionsSupport drug product recalls and pharmacy area inspectionsObserve departmental policies, procedures, quality assurance programs, and safety, security, environmental, and infection control standardsPerform other related duties as assigned consistent with the scope of this roleRequired QualificationsHigh School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)Active registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the District of Columbia Board of PharmacyCompletion of a pharmacy technician training program or national certification through successful passing of the National Pharmacy Technician certification examination is requiredOne (1) year of related pharmacy experience preferredProficiency with pharmacy computerized systems and the Microsoft Office suiteAbility to perform the mathematical operations required for inventory, supply requests, and recordkeepingAbility to lift supplies and equipment up to 40 lbs., for up to approximately 40% of the workdayStrong written and verbal communication, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skillsWhat We OfferWork-life balanceRecognition and rewards for professional expertiseCompetitive, comprehensive benefit plans including health, disability, vacation, sick leave, and 403(b) retirement planTuition remission at Howard University for you and/or eligible dependent children — up to two (2) courses per semesterA mission-driven environment rooted in over 150 years of excellence, service, and advocacy for the communities we serveAbout Howard University HospitalHoward University Hospital (HUH) is the nation's only teaching hospital located on the campus of a historically Black university.
