Pay Rate: $4,343.00 – $4,559.92/month Job Location: Chabot College, 25555 Hesperian Blvd., Hayward, CA 94545 Job Summary The Chabot-Las Positas Community College District is seeking a Grounds Worker I to be assigned to Chabot College in Hayward, California. Under general supervision, perform routine grounds maintenance and repair duties on district grounds including landscaped areas and athletic fields; maintain lawns, grounds, and other cultivated areas; and operate and maintain a variety of light and heavy powergrounds equipment to perform grounds maintenance work. Representative Duties Participate in landscape maintenance duties including watering, mowing, weeding, trimming, edging, renovating, and fertilizing lawns. Plant, water, and maintain landscaped areas consisting of bushes, trees, flowers, and shrubs; re‑seed, plant, and maintain new grass and plants; trim and prune bushes, trees, and shrubs; stake trees as necessary. Rake leaves and/or clear debris from walks, fields, courts, parking lots, and other open areas; load, remove, and dispose of trimmings and cuttings; pick‑up trash; empty trash receptacles. Prepare, maintain, and paint athletic fields for a variety of sporting events. Operate heavy equipment and other maintenance equipment such as tractors, front‑loaders, parking‑lot sweepers and vacuums, trucks, large mowers, forklifts, and power tools such as mowers, edgers, chainsaws, rototillers, and blowers. Operate a garbage truck to transport rubbish to the local landfill. Dig ditches, holes, and trenches. Perform asphalt repairs and small concrete forming and pouring jobs. Assist in the maintenance and repair of the district’s irrigation system as assigned. Safely apply herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides according to established rules and procedures. Perform preventive maintenance on vehicles, equipment, and tools; make minor adjustments and repairs; report the need for major repairs and maintenance. Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed. Perform related duties as required. Minimum Education and Experience Any combination of the following would provide a typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities for a Grounds Worker I: formal or informal education or training that ensures reading and writing at a necessary level; one year of grounds maintenance experience; possession of an appropriate, valid driver’s license. Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of: Operations, services, and activities of a grounds maintenance program. Methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in a comprehensive grounds maintenance program. Methods and techniques of mowing, edging, pruning, and trimming a variety of lawns, shrubs, and trees. Operational characteristics of ground maintenance equipment and tools. Identification of landscape plant material. Nutrients, soil conditions, and other materials to promote healthy plant growth. Basic principles and practices used in irrigation system operation and maintenance. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices. Principles and practices of record keeping. Pertinent federal, state and local codes, laws and regulations. Principles and practices used in the safe application of restricted pesticides. Ability to: Perform a variety of maintenance and repair work in the care and maintenance of campus grounds. Operate a variety of tools, equipment and vehicles used in ground maintenance work. Perform grounds maintenance work in accordance with established schedules and in preparation for special events. Care for and maintain plants, shrubs, flowers, turf, and trees. Assist in the maintenance and repair of the district’s irrigation system. Safely and effectively apply fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides. Accurately identify plant material. Mix, pour and finish concrete as needed. Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Work independently with minimum supervision. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Work with and exhibit sensitivity to and understanding of the varied racial, ethnic, cultural, sexual orientation, academic, socio-economic, and disabled populations of community college students. Physical Demands and Working Environment Work is performed outdoors in fields, traveling from site to site; exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals, noxious weeds, pollens, insect stings, noise, dust, smoke, fumes, odors, gases, and various weather and temperature conditions; work at heights on scaffolding and ladders; work near moving mechanical parts; work on slippery or uneven surfaces; frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, reaching, twisting; push, pull, lift and carry moderate to heavy loads; dexterity for specialized hand and power tools and equipment; verbal communication required.
