Extruder Operator

The Extruder Operator efficiently controls the operation of an extrusion line from raw material input through to finished product. This role sets up, operates, and monitors extrusion equipment, ensures products meet quality and safety standards, and maintains accurate production and quality records while working on rotating 12-hour shifts.

Responsibilities

• Operate the extrusion line and all related equipment from raw material input to finished product output.
• Set up extrusion machines, including configuring films and resins, color concentrates and additives, production speeds, start and stop functions, and changeovers.
• Perform die and screw teardown, screen pack changes, and use line-specific tools while following proper lockout/tagout procedures.
• Maintain extruded products to required gauge, length, width, bond strength, color, dyne, and surface finish, and identify and correct surface defects.
• Conduct and document quality control tests, including double checks and data collection, in accordance with established procedures.
• Transfer production and quality data accurately into daily production log books, quality control documents, and other required forms.
• Follow the production schedule and related documentation to meet customer orders and adhere to specific production instructions.
• Communicate line malfunctions promptly to minimize production downtime and support quick resolution of issues.
• Maintain a clean and orderly work area and warehouse to support efficient and safe operations.
• Maintain a safe working environment by following all company safety policies and procedures and promptly reporting unsafe conditions and incidents.
• Uphold company quality standards throughout all stages of the production process.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support overall production and operational goals.

• High school diploma or equivalent and/or 1–2 years of relevant experience or a forklift certification.
• Experience with machine operation, extrusion, production, or general labor in a manufacturing environment.
• Ability to read and interpret production tickets and related production documents.
• Ability to work at an accelerated pace while maintaining accuracy and quality.
• Ability to perform basic math calculations and measure using a measuring tape or other instruments.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Computer literacy and ability to use basic computer systems for data entry and documentation.
• Dedication to continuous improvement in processes, quality, and safety.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and to bend, stretch, and stand for extended periods of time.

• Previous experience operating extrusion lines or similar industrial machinery.
• Familiarity with handling films, resins, color concentrates, and additives in a production environment.
• Understanding of lockout/tagout procedures and safe machine operation practices.
• Comfort working rotating 12-hour shifts, including day (6 a.m.–6 p.m.) and night (6 p.m.–6 a.m.) schedules.
• Strong attention to detail for monitoring product specifications and quality standards.

Work Environment

The work environment is a clean and well-lit manufacturing facility focused on extrusion production. Team members work rotating 12-hour shifts, with an initial two-week training period on a Monday–Thursday, 6 a.m.–4 p.m. schedule, followed by assignment to either day shift (6 a.m.–6 p.m.) or night shift (6 p.m.–6 a.m.). The role involves operating industrial extrusion equipment, handling raw materials such as films, resins, and additives, and performing physical tasks including lifting up to 50 pounds and standing, bending, and stretching for extended periods. Safety procedures, including lockout/tagout, are an integral part of daily operations, and employees follow established safety and quality protocols throughout their work.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Grand Rapids, MI.

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $21.00/hr.
