Registered Nurse

The Registered Nurse will provide professional nursing services to individuals diagnosed with mental illness at Pilgrim Psychiatric Center. The role involves delivering nursing interventions, administering medications, documenting patient care, addressing patient needs and concerns, and supporting a safe and secure therapeutic environment. The RN will also participate in patient admissions, discharges, and transfers; maintain medication inventory standards; provide health education and counseling; support infection control practices; and collaborate with multidisciplinary treatment teams. This position will primarily provide coverage for other staff members, so the work schedule may vary based on facility needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide professional nursing services to individuals diagnosed with mental illness.
• Conduct nursing interventions and maintain accurate, timely nursing documentation.
• Administer medications in accordance with prescribed treatment plans and facility procedures.
• Maintain inventory standards for medications, controlled drugs, and narcotics.
• Provide health teaching, counseling, and education to patients.
• Address patient needs, concerns, and changes in condition and communicate relevant information to appropriate healthcare personnel.
• Complete patient admissions, discharges, and transfers in accordance with facility procedures.
• Maintain a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment for patients.
• Participate in staff education and training initiatives as required.
• Follow established infection control standards and procedures.
• Function as a member of the treatment team and collaborate with other healthcare professionals to support patient care.
• Follow facility policies, clinical procedures, documentation requirements, and patient safety standards.

Work Schedule & Conditions

The position will primarily provide coverage for other staff members; the schedule will vary according to facility requirements. Available shifts generally include:

• Day Shift: 6:50 AM – 3:50 PM EST.
• Evening Shift: 3:50 PM – 11:50 PM EST.
• Night Shift: 11:50 PM – 7:50 AM EST.
• 12-hour shifts may be available at times.
• Overtime is not required under the stated schedule.
• No travel is required.
• Work on NYS holidays is not required.
• The assignment is expected to last up to two years.
• Candidates must be able to accommodate varying shifts based on staffing coverage needs.

Qualifications & Requirements

Valid New York State Registered Nurse (RN) license and current registration to practice nursing in New York State are required. Ability to provide professional nursing care to individuals diagnosed with mental illness. Competence in medication administration and nursing documentation. Ability to maintain medication inventory standards, including controlled drugs and narcotics. Strong patient assessment, observation, communication, and documentation skills. Ability to address patient needs and concerns while maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment. Ability to complete patient admissions, discharges, and transfers in accordance with facility procedures. Knowledge of infection control practices and patient safety standards. Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary treatment teams. Flexibility to work variable shifts and provide staffing coverage as required.

Background Check Requirements

Candidates must complete the applicable background screening requirements before beginning the assignment.

• Criminal background check: To be provided by the staffing vendor.
• SEL (Staff Exclusion List) screening: To be performed by Human Resources.
• SCR screening: To be performed by Human Resources.
• Any additional screening documentation required by the facility must be completed as part of the onboarding process.

Vaccination & Medical Requirements

Candidates must meet the facility's medical screening and immunization requirements, including:

• TB testing as required by the facility.
• Measles and Rubella: Titers demonstrating immunity or proof of two MMR vaccinations.
• Varicella: Varicella titers are strongly recommended.
• Hepatitis B: Hepatitis B titer or vaccination record is strongly recommended.
• Influenza vaccination: Required during flu season; masking may be required as an alternative under the stated facility requirements.
• Pre-placement health screening form: Must be completed as required by the facility.
