MAINTENANCE MECHANIC

Summary You will serve as a MAINTENANCE MECHANIC in the Production Resources Department (Code 900), Production Resources Manager (Code 901), Service Shop (Code 990) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD. Duties Help You will perform a variety of tasks involved in the servicing and upkeep of vessels, and maintenance of radiologically controlled buildings. You will perform tasks in at least two or more of the following trades; electrical, air-conditioning, plumbing, pipefitting, carpentry, painting, and insulation. You will prepare, pack, and transfer radiological material. You will produce requested carpentry and woodworking products to support shipyard maintenance work. You will plan and lay out the installation, modification, and repair of various new and existing piping systems and equipment. You will operate and maintain HVAC systems and ductwork/vent inside radiological controlled areas. You will remove and replace electrical fixtures and controls; making repairs; rearranging old or installing new outlets, relays, switches, light fixtures, and testing circuits. You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs. This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time. You will be required to climb ladders and scaffolding. You will be required to work in small and/or confined spaces. Ability to observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. Ability to utilize tools and equipment common to the trade and be skilled in the safety precautions, principals, and work methods associated with a maintenance mechanic.
